Hi there, yesterday I purchased BT's option three broadband which allows an 8 Mb connection, unlimited downloads etc. The exchange for my area is around 2 miles or so from my house and provides up to 3 Mb broadband. I am wondering what sort of effective download speed I can expect and what BT's policy is on upgrading the exchange or local lines any time in the near future so I can get faster internet.

So the 3Mbps is the estimate BT gave you when you signed up?
It's a guesstimate, and there's no real way of knowing what you'll get until you get it.

Depends what your modem connects at. Somewhere between zero and 7.2Mbps.

The problem's the length and quality of the cable between you and the exchange. They don't have a policy for upgrading your line, and it's unlikely that'll change in the medium term.
