BT Business Speed Question

In the router settings it says:

Max download rate: 21265 kbs
Rate: 6652 kbs
IP Profile: 5500 kps

6652 kbs is what BT said our Router synced to, so that is the fastest speed we can get. But we used to have 15mb
But what i do not understand is, why not 21265 kbs or around it?
We had some BT Engineers round who found a fault and they said that we should easily be able to get 20mb as the cable length from us to the exchange is 740m.
Anyone know why we may not be able to get a decent speed?

Current DSL Connection:

Down / Up
Rate: 6652 kbs / 1168 kbs
Max Rate: 21321 kbs / 1184 kbs
Noise Margin: 28.4 dB / 6.4 dB
Attenuation: 17.9 dB / 6.9 dB
Output Power: 18.4 dBm / 11.9 dBm

Protocol: G.DMT2+ Annex A
Channel: Fast
ATM PVC: 0/38

Rate Cap: 21321 kbs
Attenuation @ 300kHz: 17.9 dB
Uncanceled Echo: -16.4 dB Ok
VCXO Frequency Offset: 4.4 ppm Ok
Final Receive Gain: -1.3 dB Ok
Impulse Noise Comp. Tones: 0 Ok
Excessive Impulse Noise: 0 Ok

Cheers (Going rather mad talking to BT!)

BT are right. For whatever reason, you're currently connected at 6652kbps but with a very high SNR margin.
The modem seems to say it's ADSL2+ so there's no reason it shouldn't connect faster. Other than perhaps trying another modem, you're stuck dealing with BT - they're probably going to have to "reset your profile".

I don't know much about SNR's, but i just found this:

If you have a high SNR on your line, this means that you have a good quality telephone line with very little noise present.

Which in our case isn't right as we have quite a bad line and can always hear the DSL (fax sounding) noise in the background. At the weekend the phone was unusable. We contacted BT regarding this and they say its a problem with our equipment :( But that's BT for you, it's never their fault is it!

I've tried using a DSL2 Netgear router which gives a similar speed but browsing is a hell of a lot faster, but its not mine.

So do i take it there is a problem with our line or something interfering with the line to cause a high SNR?

Well, high SNR is a good thing - the higher SNR you've got the faster you can sync. What should happen is that the target SNR rate should be 6dB while allowing the sync rate to go as high as it can (which should indeed give you around 20mbit sync), but it seems your target SNR is way too high.

There's many reasons that could've caused this but your profile/target needs to be reset. This needs to be arranged via your ISP, but good luck getting BT's support to understand that.

If you're getting interference in the voice side you need to make sure it isn't your equipment. That includes trying new filters.
High SNR margin = good quality might have applied with fixed rate services but it's not so simple when you throw rate adaption into the mix.

Ahhhh, contacting BT again, oh what joy. I've been on the phone to them as long as i can remember and yesterday i spoke to someone on live chat, where at one point this woman said 'This is obviously a Windows 7 problem, would you like me to give you the number for Microsoft?', I almost screamed but instead calmly replied... 'erm, not really ... we have a connection problem, isn't that down to BT!?'

Last time i spoke to them on the phone they said that if i contacted them again regarding speed issues that they would ignore anything i said

Oh I hate them so much!

I tried 6 different Filters so far.

Well thanks for your replies, at least now i have some insight into what the problem might be, maybe I'll call them one last time :(

Just found this, sounds rather familiar:

Sometimes though, you will see cases where someone has had a fault on their line that has caused an increase in a customer’s SNR margin. This is often done as part of BT Wholesale’s diagnostic process or due to the actions of their Dynamic Line Management systems. The problem arises when the fault is fixed or the condition that caused the SNR increase is no longer present – Customers are sometimes left with an artificially high SNR margin and a lower than optimal sync rate.

Well, after a lot of persistence and them telling me that the SNR was fine, the bloke i was talking eventually went off to ask someone and came back saying that the engineer he spoke to had said that he couldn't believe that the SNR was that high and yes it need to be changed.

But look what these retards have gone and done:

Rate: 16646 kbs / 444 kbs
Max Rate: 16646 kbs / 876 kbs
Noise Margin: 14.6 dB / 29.5 dB

Lowered the Download SNR to 14 - they said they were going to try 12 to start with.
But changed the upload from 6.4 to 29.5

Called them back, sat in a queue for 15 minutes, then when 5pm came round i got a message. 'The office is now closed, please call back between 9-5!' Agggggggggggggh

Why don't BT know this stuff? I feel like every time i call them i need to become an expert in their field just to get anything done. So frustrating.

Well, at least im getting somewhere ;)

Yup, as said because the SNR is high it isn't your line or BT, either the router or the line card is at fault, most likely the profile needs resetting back to full speed. You should really only need a 6db or 9db target SNR on that line.

With BT I find it is best to let them fail at something totally stupid such as this then speak to a manager while destroying them all with technical reasons why they are wrong until you get someone that actually knows at least what a router is.

Well finally getting somewhere, since the SNR was lowered to around 15 the speed as been going up each day and we now have around 15mb down :D
Just need to get the upload reset and we should be sorted!

Thanks for pointing out the rather high SNR, appreciate it ;)

Blimey I think BT have finally done something right!

Last week after getting them to lower our upload SNR from 30 to 6, for some bizarre reason we were left with an upload speed of 96Kb/s

But after me pestering them every day for an update on the issue, today we had visit from a rather grumpy engineer, and unbelievably we're now getting 19mb down and 1mb up :D

Hmm...

IP Profile 18mb, actual speed almost 21mb :p
