BT estimator has changed!

Line speed capabilities
  • Rate adaptive (250k and 500k) : GreenFixed Rate (1000k and 2000k) : GreenMAX speed (upto 8000k) : Green (8000 kbps)
    250k, 500k, 1000k, 2000k and 8000k are all available on this line.

I guess the samknows checker just takes its information from the same source as the BT checker does. Both of them used to say I could maybe get 1Mb, but now they both say I can only get a maximum of 512k... which is rather silly when BT did a line test recently when I was put onto 1Mb briefly, and it was rock solid at that speed.

I am now on MAX and getting a reliable 1.5Mbps. Weird.

Great, my dad's gonna love this. He has just got a letter through from Demon Internet saying he can get 8Mpbs only to find he can get 1Mbps max from the sites above :/

Well i couldn't get 2mb before, but after seeing that the checker had changed i phoned AOL yesterday and asked them to check to see if i could get 2mb now, as it was saying i could now, anyway checked said yes, i said great can i have a regrade then to 2mb, yup they said and put it through, that was about 11am yesterday ive just came in this morning and bang im connected at 2.2mb. :D :D

Work has gone from 6.5mbit to 8mbit, I checked it before I got the MAC code and again now, be great we get 4 let alone 6.5 or even 8, few days more and I should know how overly optimistic BT are!

Right this is odd, im still on 1mb even though its saying im connecting at 2.2mb, just tried a speed test and its the same as 1mb around 120 odd k a sec download speed, well she said yesterday i would get a free router sent out and once i get that i can just connect it up, but i said what my modem can i still use that if i want, and she said yeah but once you sign into the AOL software again you'll get a new agreement popping up as its a new 12 month contract, now im not using the software so i never got anything new popping up when i logged on, just said at the top in the bubble now connected at 2.2mb so could be why im still on 1mb, so anyone know if ill have to install the software so i can say yes to the new contract before it goes to 2mb speeds, or is the checker a load of guff and i can't get 2mb afterall

Thanks. :)

Hmm so you are syncing at 2272 kbps are you? That would indicate that your line has indeed been regraded. It seems a tad ridiculous to have a whole new 12 month contract just because you regraded though  The joys of AOL eh :D

I dont know what im synching at, i just logged on and it poppped up at the top as normal AOL is now connected but it says 2.2mb, but its still 1mb .

Im not to fussed about a new 12 month contract as i only migrated across in June so its only a couple of extra months.

Now if i phone them up, can they tell im not signed in with the software.

Speedtest is saying 1.01mbs which means you can download at 129k, thast 1bm, yet wehn i connect its saying connected at 2.2mb.

I wouldn't have thought it would be in the contract that you HAVE to use AOL's proprietary software? I would just ring up and ask if I were you - the worst case scenario would be to install it briefly just to accept the contract. I'm assuming that it doesn't let you do it over the web then. They're not gonna shoot you if you tell them you ditched their rubbish software ;)

Oh, you might wanna try logging into BT's speedtester, to see whether it is AOL limiting you to 1Mb, or whether it's your line that is limited.

Yeah thats what i was gona do just quicky install it accept it, then make my connection again, and dump it, its just a faff on, and i just want to make sure that if i do that it will go to 2mb or is the checker wrong and i can only get 1mb no higher.

Just done a BT wholesaler test for BB

Said this.

I downloaded a 1.7mb file in 681 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:

For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

Well my mates saying something about it may not have been activated for the 2mb yet as they are still working on it, even though it is showing as im connecting at 2.2mb, so to give it a couple of days as it does seem quick seen as i only phoned yesterday morning about half 11.

Yup im synching at 2272 according to the 2x green arrows.

Right just phoned AOL up, she said ill be showing as 2.2mb as they have upgraded my package their end, and bt still need to activate the line for the 2mb which could take about 48hrs after you call, and so to give it till tomorrow around dinner time to see if thay have acticvated it yet (BT), as i said to her i thought it was a bit quick as i only phoned yesterday morning about it, and i never got the new terms and conditions to agree to (never said i wasnt using the software), and she said once its activated by BT i'll get the new terms conditions then. :p

Hmm then again why are the 2x green arrows showing as 2272kbps.

Thats on SamKnows and also on the Prodigy networks checker, my mate says theres a lot of exchange work going on over here like, so im gonna upgrade to 2mb tomorrow from 1mb.

Ive never checked any of them for months now either, can't hurt to try i suppose, ill only get put on hold while they run the test on me line see if i can get 2mb, so they'll say yay or nay.
That's why I left AOL after 5 years as they refused to put me on to Max as they said that my line can only handle 1 Mb.

I said that I know this but this limit doesn't apply to Max but they said that my line wasn't good enough, blah, blah

If my line isn't good enough for Max then it's strange that I sync at 4 Mb and get around 3.3 Mb off a 3.5 Mb BRAS profile!

I expect that as the 2 Mb (fixed line speed) is now showing green that AOL would upgrade me to Max now but it's tough as I'm not going back :p

gonna stay away from MAX at the minute, hearing about loads of disconnections, my mate said he was on it and was getting disconnected all the time so he got off it.
Max isn't too bad having been on it for over 4 months on a long(ish) line but it was a nightmare for the first few weeks until I asked my ISP to put a request in to BT to have my SNR margin raised to 9 dB.

Since this has happened (along with having interleaving enabled), my line is a lot more stable.

Sorted this in another thread, im getting activated on the Gold 2mb package on Monday, i did get an e-mail from them saying i get switched in 7 days, after the regrade etc... but BT done the regrade major fast, as i only phoned for it on the Monday about half 11, and by the time i logged on about the same time on Tuesday it was done, i was already synching at 2.2mb, still can't complain its only a couple of days. :D
