Hey y'all

So i'm moving into a new built house next week and they have just finished furnishing etc, i was originally told we would get a fiber internet connection from BT but i never got any details.
i went to view the house today and it turns out there is actually a fiber cable coming into the house right into a BT modem (if its even called a modem)

By the look of it the box on the top left is a battery backup, not sure why that's necessary, the box on the right a a modem or router or something? (HG8240) and the box at the bottom houses the fiber cable.

Anyway I've had a look around online but i cant seem to find much information about the setup so I was wondering if anyone here might be able to explain it all to me? :)

If there's a battery backup it'll be there so the land landline will still work in a power-cut. Necessary if you have fibre only.

There'll be an Ethernet port to plug a router into and a port to connect a traditional phone.

That's one rough looking install. You'd have thought they'd have a better thought-out system.

interesting, so the phone line can run through fiber too then?

we don't actually have a phone line or internet connected yet, the BT guy is coming out next week to connect the phone line, then i have to wait another week to get an internet connection set up.

they might tidy things up a bit once everything is up and running, if not i'll have a go.

cant wait to see what kind of speeds i can get

Is this in York by any chance? They have a 1Gb network being installed by OR currently I believe.

It's a battery backup to allow the phone to work if the power is out.

The only issue with FTTP is the number of ISPs who just aren't set up to work with it - if you're happy with BT then this isn't a problem.

nope, Chelmsford, Essex.

1Gb would be nice, doubt it tho.
as its a new build its been impossible getting these kind of details. just wait and see i guess

I wish Openreach had spent some time integrating the battery backup into the ONT. The full setup just looks messy.

My Mrs sister just got a new build and has the same thing set up. She called BT they offered her 330/30 connection! For I think £50 and line rental on top. I've got a new build too, But was only able to get 80/20. I'm with sky and never had any issues. I do believe BT is the only ISP offering 330/30 at this time.

Looks the same as what I have, yes the phone runs through the fibre.

They'll send you a HomeHub when you sign up. You plug the red port on the back of the home hub into Port 1 on the big box in your picture. Then you plug all your stuff into the home hub like normal.

I've got through 2 years without any problems without understanding it any more than that :)

That is a hideous looking install. I'm guessing its somewhere prominent like the hallway as well and not a store cupboard or somewhere equally less intrusive?

Nice to have the option of a fibre connection though non the less.

Yeah I have this installation. As already mentioned the battery is there purely to keep the land-line going if there is a power cut.

Granted it looks ugly but my lord its quick;

It'd be better if they had at least housed all of that inside one bigger box, at least it wouldn't look quite so unsightly. Probably worth it for the speeds though!

It's exactly as you've mentioned it. Although I've got the fibre coil box outside next to the front door, and the modem and battery backup unit (BBU) in the closet under the stairs.

I think it gives you 20 mins of power in a power cut, allows you to use the phone line in an emergency (most likely with an old phone).

300/30!! you've got my hopes up now lol

I agree its not pretty but luckily its all well out of sight, its been installed next to the main fuse box in the cupboard under the stairs, so no worries there. the only thing i'm really worried about with that is running an ethernet cable up to the study.
