BT hacking into my HomeHub!?

It's happened twice now, someone is logging into my hub, somehow bypassing the username and password (changed from the default) and resetting it

Today no one has been able use the printer (Canon iP5200R Wireless). After returning home and looking turning on my computer i realised why.

The router comes set up using WEP encription, but i read somewhere that WEP was easy to hack, so set it up using WPA2-PSK.
Because the router had been reset no-one could connect to it, except for the computer downstairs which is connected via a network cable, but because the printer is wireless it could only connect to the internet.

Now i have to go through the router setting up ports n stuff again :(

I assume its possible for BT to this as I've heard they can update the router firmware from their end. If so can someone recommend a good cheap wireless router that can protect me from these cheeky hacking gits please ;)

what neil says is the truth though dude, i wouldnt  at it.

The home hub really is as cheap as it feels.

I would get a decent modem/router combo on there and you will probably find your net connection could well improve over what it was with the home hub.

Really is a poor bit of kit mate, you could ask BT for voyager modem, their a lot better imho.

noticed your in maidenhead.

where abouts?

If your not too far from the exchange switch to BE im getting 24mb on it now. and live up the crescent.

Your wanting a cheap replacement, ask BT for a voyager. they will send one out, their a better bit of kit rather than the home hub.

or drop me a mail. im in maidenhead and could possibly sort summat out for you.

Similar problem with mine. It has always been a little shaky (dns cache refuses to clear, connection drops out, etc) but a couple of days ago the wireless connection fell over and wouldn't come back.

At the time I thought nothing of it, whipped a patch cable out the cupboard and wired it up, no problem apart from offending the wife's aesthetic sensibilities (no fan of cables there).

The wireless still refused to come back so last night I delved a little further and discovered it was WEP'ed up instead of WPA-PSK'ed. And into the bargain wouldn't let me into the control panel.

Did a factor reset and reinstalled BT's atrocious software and finally got it to accept decent encryption, working and correctly port forwarded at two this morning.

I live near Boulters Lock, i guess im about a mile away from the exchange (if the exchange is in that large building behind Woolworths), but switching isp's isn't an option for about 11 months :(

I'll give BT a call tomorrow and ask about getting this Voyager - is it wireless? If i had some money (jobless at the moment) i would buy something decent.

Hope you got a result from them.
Hmm, hardly :( Called them up and explained how i had set the router up to use WPA2-PSK at which the bloke immediately replied 'The BTHomeHub is not compatible with WPA/WPA2'. So the fact that these settings are available in the router settings and that i have been using these settings since i got the hub means that it is al in my head?

When i mentioned the problem with the router constantly restarting and restting its self he said that to try flashing the router with the recovery software on my BT CD...

'I dont know where my cd is' i said, 'you need your cd', 'I'd have to go look for it, but im not doing that know', 'do you have you cd now', 'er...no, i just told you i dont know where it is.... do you not have this recovery software available online so i can download it?', ....'no, you need your cd'

10 minutes later... go here www.btopenworld.com/drivers .... er right!
'Run the recovery software and we'll call you back in 2 hours'

So i ran it, several times and on each occasion it failed!

When they called back i had to tell them what i had done and the bloke said. Unplug everything from your modem and turn off you computer. Now reconnect and reboot.

'Can you connect to the internet?'.... 'Yes', 'Problem solved then!' .... 'err No'.
'If i wanted to connect to the internet all i would have to do is restart the bloody router, what i want to do is what you told me to do which is to get this recovery software to work!'
Doesnt the fact that the recovery keeps failing say the maybe there is something wrong with the Hub? Gaaaaaagh.

He said someone would call me back with regards to my problem, but never did - which was actually quite a relief as i was too angry to talk to another Indian that day.

On the plus, the finally sent me one of these Hub Phone things, unfortunately the instructions on how to get it to work are so useless, it seems i may have to call another Indian to get it to work  Does anyone know how to get these to work? Its plugged into the Hub, but the little aerial in the top right hand corner is constantly flashing. I've plugged it into the Hub, restarted the hub as instructed, tried to register the hub, but although im standing right next to the Hub, im apparently not close enough to it on something.

I dream of a day when all BT products are straight forward and work instantly :p By which day i will have left BT forever!
