My sister's v1 home hub has just died, so she needs a replacement. She just needs a decent wireless router as she didn't use the VOIP bit.

BT have quoted £45 for a replacement.

I have a Draytek 2800VG which I'm using with Be at the moment. It's very good, but the chipset limits Be to about 7Mbps.
Would this (draytek) be a good replacement for the BT Home Hub?
If so, I could get new draytek to max out my Be connectuon ;) (yes I like drayteks and giving my old one to my sister makes for easier maintenance, although it's easy enough to learn how to configure a different one)

Any recommendations welcome.

Why not either ditch BT for another ISP (who will provide a free router) or tell BT that you're leaving unless they give you a free replacement?

You should be able to pick them up cheaper than that off an auction site

I (and she) wouldn;t touch that site with someone elses bargepole.

She doesn't want to change. Her router has died and she is without internet access. Right now she needs a router. If she wants to change she can do it some other time.

What everyone else is saying is that BT why should she pay for a new router! get her to ring BT & state that if they cant give her a new router then she will be forced to leave as she is out of contract. That draytek will work 100% anyway(temp option), best bet is push BT to give her the new router by using the I'm leaving & I want my mac if I dont get a nice free router... new customers only rubbish & sky or o2 is cheaper.

There are far Better isp's around anyway & with very little downtime on migration I'd do that, as you have stated she just wants the net but still get her to ring BT 1st. (I got a few free routers from them whenI was with BT)

Kev!

I've got it sorted out now with some router shuffling.

Also if anyone can get a freebie, it would be my sister. She would have no doubt attempted to get a free replacement, but for reasons unknown she was unable to and the best deal she could get was the half price replacement.

I appreciate the suggestions to change ISP, but that wasn't what this thread was requesting..

I can now get her back online Sunday morning - a bit quicker than the 3 working days for a replacement from BT or even longer if she migrated.

Unbelievable. I have four of the things. Every time I query the bill or anything they send me a free one. The latest was last week. I downgraded to option one because they upped the monthly limit & I don't use it a lot, 2 days later another hub, shiny black v2 this time !

same here. they seem to hand them out willy nilly to some people. i was talking to someone at work who still has one of the old bt routers that doesnt even have wireless and they were amazed that by would / should have given them one at the start of one of their contracts.

i phoned up and asked how much to upgrade to the v2 hh about 5 days ago and they quoted me 45 quid, no mention of half price offer. they said if i wait till my contract is up in december they will give me one for free.. im not exactly a good customer either, i abuse my bandwidth no end :p

a quick mention of "fit for purpose" would probably throw the call centre person into a dicky fit and then proceed to order you a new router

also sometimes i find its a bit hit and miss with certain people when i call. i would definatly recommend she phones back up and has a chat with a different member of staff, from my experience and from other stories i have heard, she will almost definatly get a new hub sent out

This makes no sense - they gave her a free router 3 years ago and now it's died. Unfortunate but not exactly unheard of. Your suggestion is like phoning up Orange and saying your phone that you got free 3 years ago has broken and you want a new one or you're leaving - they'd just close your account.

Not really, I was with BT & TBH I have done this along with countless amounts of others. This rule applies with most companies that are out of contract & just rolling every month (depending on what agent U get on the phone). I can see what U mean but I'm not just the one that suggested that? Anyway as the OP stated will the draytek work... yes

orange would have given you a free phone every year you renewed your contract...
