Hello guys and girls

I have had Bt 2MB broadband for ages on the homehub with no problems at all until recently when I noticed my net access seemed to be slower than usual and any file I downloaded seemed to be locked at 30kb/sec. I checked through the hub and the downstream speed seemed very small so I restarted the hub and it returned to 2MB, however I am still stuck at the 30kb/sec speed. I have two machines connected and this is still the case. I know I have no config problems on my PC as I recently formatted. Anyone had this problem or knows of the cause?

Any help appreciated.

Yep i had this problem, sadly because BT suck and only employ indian people who can hardly talk any english you wont get any help from them apart from the usual "its not our fault it must be you" , i had to wait roughly a week for the line to sort itself out.
You see even if your on the unlimited downloads package they actually have another policy in place thats called "fair usage policy" meaning if you download more than what they say you should then your line will be limited to 30kb/s for about a week.

Oh and dont forget they make up seriously lame excuses, "did your neighbour use a vacume cleaner when you were on the internet ?" "have you used a microwave anywhere near your computer while making bombay curry ?" "did a cat fart 1.28 miles away ?" "were you making a funny face when you pressed on the internet buton ?" "did you think of george bush naked ?"

I am not even a heavy downloader, use torrent files very rarely, anything else work related, normally in .rar format. I have just read on another forum that if they do cap you then the speed should return after midnight, so I shall wait and see, upload speed seems fine. I am on a package from years ago which I think is now the unlimited package.

If the rate your modem connected at was low, it'll have dragged your IP profile down along with it - and it won't increase immediately. Run the BT Speedtest, and see what value it gives you for that.

I got at first:

The Performance Tester is now testing Broadband connection. Your configured download throughput speed for this service is 250 k

The result screen said:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 2368 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 250 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 229 kbps

IP profile for your line is - 250 kbps

That's why you're only getting 30kB/s. It's got nothing to do with BT Retail throttling. You're not on 2Mbps though, you're on up to 8Mbps - it's just your modem's only connected at a little over 2Mbps.

So surely I should be getting the 150-200kb/sec I was getting last week? If this is not the case how can it be fixed?

Yer you should. Sigh. Its BT mate, i was with them for a good many years where i had to stay with them due to work reasons and i had this problem day in, day out. As many have said you've got no hope with the stupid call centres.

The only way i got round it was to ring them and ask for the IP Profile to be reset. Now this was like asking for blood to be poured from 38 stones at once. After escilating it up to about level 5 (ahem..) they had a vauge knowledge of what this "IP Profile thing" was and eventually some *lovely gentleman* did reset it, which lasts for about 2 weeks then it dies again.

You'll end up pulling your hair out mate you really will.

The best solution is to Move to Be There / O2 Broadband. They are nothing short of superb. (If they are active on your exchange obviously)

Any drop in speeds could be down to your local exchange. best bet is to unplug your modem for around 30 minutes and then plug it back in. What "should" happen is when the BB is re-established on your modem, the speed is synced with both your ISP (who request the speed) and your line (which recieve the speed). hope this makes sense as i had loads of trouble with my ISP (dum dum dummmm... SKY) and im recalling distant memories ;)
