Howdy,

BT just stopped are ISDN without warning. Turns out they have stopped the service.

Dad was on the phone to them and they have managed to sell him the most expensive broadband package.

So the original plan was we were going to go with a decent ISP and we both chipped in for a Netgear router. I was going to have the router in my room so we were going to bring a phone line up and the family PC downstairs would connect wirelessly to the router. Means I could have my 360 plugged in the router and have my PC on for downloading.

So now that's all changed cause on the 24th we are going to get this home hub installed. So the home hub will have to be downstairs cause it is a phone dock. So how am I going to connect to the ADSL line now? Does it mean I have to buy a CAT5/6 reel of cable and plug one end into my router the other in the hub?

Also is there anything I need to know about ADSL with BT? Closed ports? Strange caps? I know we will be capped at 40GB a month... just don't know much more details.

Cheers

Hi,

The BT home hub is wireless! If you want to connect your 360 and your pc up by a wireless network ethernet bridge, then plug a switch into it. That will allow you to plug your xbox in as if it was straight from the router :) and the same with your pc.

Hope this helps,

Always go wired over wireless if you can. Since the original plan was to run a phone cable to your room, you can just run a standard ethernet cable instead.

Wireless is really a no no. I'm going to be doing a lot of gaming on 360 and PC and high pings are not a option.. (yes I know I am with BT lol)

Also wireless is stupidly unrealiable. I get loads of EMI interference in my house. An example would be when a moterped goes past the the road near my house my DVB signal cuts out. Wireless in my house is worse.

With the ethernet cable. Where will the other end go? The Home Hub has one ethernet port and thats for the family PC.

Just get a switch and plug that into the Home Hub then plug your PC and the other PC into that. It's around a tenner for a 5 port switch which will be fine.

ahh yeh. Why did I not think of that? humm

Nice. Better order some gear for OcUK then.

BTW anyone know if I can get a static IP with BT? Will it cost extra?

You can't get a static IP on BT Broadband.

So the home hub will have to be downstairs cause it is a phone dock.

You are aware that a) it's not an ordinary phone - it's a phone that works over the internet connection and b) the phone's cordless?

actualy you can get a static ip, but alas only if your on bt buisness broadband liek myself, and its extreamly high price, nea ron £7 including vat a month, most other isps, you get it free or only costs a few pounds, and wifi is a touchy subject, its hit and miss per houshold what its going to be like, to many factors come into play, ie the age of the house for example generaly determins the thickness of the walls ect, so it effects signal strengh, also what chanel you use can make a big diff also. also what make and model of the wifi card your using to connect to the router, and yup thats al the new gizmo is a router, and also do not use generic wifi cards they arnt anygood, such as the types you find in big mass produced pcs. i would just liek to add jsut becuse some peeps have probs with wifi, doesnt mean you will.hope it helps

i have a bt home hub and they have 2 ethernet ports on the back.
also they have a problem with the hub phones, i have been waiting 3 weeks for one so i would not worry about leaving the router downstairs just yet!

BT Home hub, has 2 ethernet ports ;)

one is supposed to be for the tv stuff their going to be offering in the future,

but i can confirm it works as a normal port, i have my xbox 360 plugged into it.

Port 1 on my hub is connected to a switch under my desk.
Port 2 is pluged into my xbox 360 which is at the other end of the room by the home hub.

Works a treat.

So you will have no problems, plugging home pc into port 2 ;)
and your cable to run to your room into port 1. which you can chuck into your hub/switch.

Hope that helps.

Also as above, i have not yet received my phone, problem is the account is in the missus name, and they wont talk to me lol. she cant be arsed to call and nag them, as she see's it as a toy for me lol.

Yeah, I wasn't counting Business in that.

Finding the key below backspace might be helpful though. :p

Yeh but I don't want my parents coming in my room to get the phone and bring it back to dock it. The phone does act as a normal phone as well.

Also I gather that wireless has a lot of factors involved. But all the factors are problems. I have spent a lot of my time changing channels and using netstumbler to show signal strength.

But I know it's my house. When the boiler kicks in to heat the house my wireless cuts out. It's an old cottage and I have to acccept that it sucks lol.

Ahhh, I saw the home hub has another prot but I didn't think it could be used like a normal port. So that's good news. Just need to buy a reel of CAT6 cable and a crimper set. Then I have to try to convince Dad to wire it through the house.
