My dad currently uses BT for his ISP and BT Home Hub for his router.

When i play online games EG World of warcraft i get lagg spikes of about 3-6 seconds randomly, and when im playing with 25 people im always getting disconnected constantly from the server. This is really annoying and i was wondering if you guys would be able to help me.

From what i have read on the forums its to do with the BT home hub dropping packets(no idea what it means.) I never used to have this problem but now its just constantly happening. The reason why im so confused is that this does not happen to my mates laptop who comes round my house to use his laptop. During one game i was getting disconnected about every 5 seconds so i told him to try it on his laptop and it worked fine for 2 hours.

So is this a problem to do with BT home hub? or is it to do with my adapter? or something else?

My specs are:

ISP: BT
Router: BT Home Hub
Adapter: Netgear WN111 wireless USB adapter
Speedtest: 1459kb/s download 381kb/s upload 35ms ping.

My closest exchange is http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/THCW if that helps.

Also the reason why my internet speed is so crappy is because in my area the cable can only pump out 3mb (its copper).

Thanks in advance :)

UPDATE:

I put the home hub to channel 9 and it seems to have made no difference.

When i tried to install an ethernet connection for some reason it drops the internet wirelessly which is bad because i share the internet with the rest of my family.

Is it just simply plug a ethernet cable into the phone line with a microfilter? or do i have to get the ethernet cable connected through the home hub?

I've got the home hub, and it seems fine for me. Don't play a lot of MP online, just the Call of Duty series. 1-5 on pc.

If your mate can use his laptop fine for so long then it's unlikely to be the router. As suggested, try an ethernet connection and see if the problem persists.

try ethernet connection if that works and you still want wireless get a diffrent network card, as it wont be the hub.
out of intrest are you just getting disconected from your game or the internet as a whole. if its the latter try setting the hub chanel to 9. I had conection problems and that worked for me.

um u cant connect an Ethernet cable to a microfilter, completely different cabling and you will prob break it if u try..

It has to go to the homehub

wireless is fine for games if you have a decent router & decent adaptor with decent drivers!

but i'd only use it if you have to

BT Home Hub is the worst hub ever for gaming, I had constant disconnects and i couldnt join any servers in CS.

I now have a netgear router and im not having any problems at all 10/10.

the only issue ive ever had with a homehub is a conflict of channels in a very "busy" (wireless AP wise) housing estate causing the network to just randomly disapear. changed the channel and it was fine ever since.

If you look on the home hub, there will be a socket for a Ethernet/RJ45 cable. Just run that to your PC and disable the wireless for now & give it a try. As bledd says, you really need decent wireless (router and adapter) for gaming.

I'm not sure the bit about sharing Internet with rest of family? They can still connect via wireless to the home hub if you're connected with the cable.

Ahh cheers, my dad was connecting the ethernet cable straight from the phone socket, no wonder why we had such crap internet.

I found the ethernet port on the back, im having to run it upstairs though.

Just need to see if my mate has a ethernet cable lying around that i could use.

Ill post an update to see if it works :)

PS: thanks for all the help guys didnt expect so much :D

That's a known issue with the BTHomeHub as well as many other Speedtouch/Thomson based routers. Luckily you can fix it with a simple telnet command on most routers, however the BTHomeHub has telnet disables so you can't do anything to fix it. Also affects other Steam games such as TF2 and HL2-DM.

Yeah and im shocked at the amount of people that dont know its a problem with that router.

Im having this exact problem with my BT Home Hub. It's winding me right up becasue I havent been able to play Red Orchestra (My fave MP game) for months and months. Everytime I try and play I get booted after about 10 seconds, then the Hub throws a wobbly and shuts down, sometimes knocking my internet out for ages :/

Is there anyway to fix this problem? I have a Netgear DG834 which was brilliant and I neve rhad any problem with. I want to set it up and use it, but unfortunately, we rely o the HomeHub for the phoneline, and I don't know how to set them both up so I can have the Netgear connect to the Internet whilst the hub jsut supplies the phone.

Poxy thing
