I've noticed that when gaming over WiFi my ping is absolutely atrocious 200-700ms, but when wired it's fine, the most odd thing about this is my ping to other machines on my network is perfect and transfers at ~5-10MB\s from my server...

Any idea why the wireless would be so naff for gaming? Any known issues\tweaks? My wireless card is a Intel Centrino 6235, I've not got Pro Set or Intel drivers installed, just using the ones that came with W8.

Shall I get a new router? If so, I'm assuming TL-WR1043ND w/ DD-WRT will work with Infinity?

Cheers

You don't need a new router, you need a wired connection for gaming. At least FPS gaming anyway. I have the BT HH3 (wired) and I get a ping of around 30ms to most UK servers. However, I did try those same servers, wireless, and my ping shot up to about 125ms.

It's pretty odd though - when I was using my old routers Sagem from Sky and Netgear from VM, the ping wasn't too bad, and my old house was old and had big thick brick walls... Now I'm sitting in a room next to the router with fibre board between the two..

I know that, but surely in this day in age I should be able to play WoW whilst sitting on the sofa with the missus and not have 700ms from my 54Mbit connection. There has to be something wrong with something.

Agreed, that ping does seem a tad high.

In the Advanced Wireless settings, there is a option to change the frequency to 40hz. You could give that a go to see if things improve - assuming your wireless nic can use that band.

You say you had VM? The Switch\Access point (Netgear I think you said above) should work with the Open Reach modem. Try that maybe?

As long as it has a wan port, you are good to go. The hh3 is basically a DHCP server, lan switch and wireless access point. Which I guess the Netgear is too as vm use the same setup as infinity
