Hi there, wonder if you good people can help me?

I will soon be moving to an area with no cable broadband so i intend to sign up for BT homehub. It is my understanding that the router is wireless but i can also connect an ethernet cable to it, is that correct?

In addition, what network card should i get to put into my desktop? Are they all much of a muchness or is there something i should be aiming for?
 
The Home Hub has 4 ethernet ports for wired connections. Does your desktop not have an ethernet interface, for example built into the motherboard?
 
The other big question is why do you want to sign up with BT as an ISP, if you're moving into a new place have you checked the availability of any LLU providers such as Be?

Stick your details into Samknows.com and check if there are any better options.

Even if you can't get an LLU provider you can do a damn sight better than to sign up with BT as the ISP.

This basically, BT are not great at customer cae (but then so many ISPs are poor at this) but if you can get Be or O2 broadband if you are an O2 customer, do it!

I guess i plumped for BT because it comes witha wireless router but i don't really know a whole lot about ISP's i admit because i have alwasy been with virgin and had no reson to change.

What is BE internet like? what router does it come with and what is their customer service like?
 
Simple answer:

Pretty good, no worse than a HomeHub, far better than BT - especially via email.

If you can't get Be then Zen, AAISP, Goscomb, ADSL24 or someone similar will likely offer you a FAR better quality of service than BT can.

As you can see BT don't exactly do too well, O2 and Be are one and the same apart from price and a few other line features.

Also most of the above don't tie you into a 12 or 18 month contract, which IMO is worth paying for as it can be very expensive to get away from a **** ISP.

A free router isn't really something you should be deciding about a provider over, for most people a <£50 Netgear will suffice and you can take that with you and use it on whatever provider you choose.
 
Oh, and all of this is a fairly moot point talking about Be if it isn't available at your exchange, you really need to stick your phone number or at least the postcode of your new house into Samknows and let us know what providers it says are available.
 
Well i had a quick check and it looks like BE internet is available in the local exchange (Wandsworth BTW).

I am guessing that i will still have to pay line rental to BT for this on top of the BE monthly charge?
 
Just called BT and it looks like there is still a line connected to that address so hopefully there will be no connection charge.

I asked him about line rental costs and he said it is £12.79, does that sound right to you? He was going on about free weekend calls etc but I only want the line i wont be making calls
 
If Be is available I would certainly sign up with them as apposed to BT.

Shorter contracts, likely to get far better service and you also have the option of getting more upstream speed if you sign up to Be Pro.

Also other advantages such as no FUP or limits on downloads (well not yet anyway).

Be will supply you with a wireless router, it's not great but should be adequate for most peoples needs. I can't really recommend a card for your machine as all my desktops are wired on my network.
 
If TalkTalk are LLU in your area you don't have to pay BTs line rental if you take their phone service. A lot of people **** Talk off, but Iv'e had no problems with them.
