BT Homehub?

My isp is BT and at the moment I have the homehub v2 which is the black wave shaped model.

This gives me endless jip playing certain online games, while it works flawlessly for most online games.

The ones I have problems with include all source based games, war of the roses and natural selection 2.

I have a option to upgrade to the latest homehub (the one thats showing in the tv adverts right now) which will cost £55. There is no free upgrade option for existing BT subscribers.

I was just wondering, is the new homehub worth £55 and does it still have the same problems as the old homehubs when connecting to certain games online?

As for features, I just want a wireless router so I can use ipads etc wirelessly while my pc is plugged into the router with a ethernet cable.

Would I be better off buying a router from the likes of netgear, benq, belkin etc or is the new homehub worth the money?

I do not have bt infinity.

Thanks :)

Put the £55 towards any other router than BTs. Some people will say they are fine but just like you I have had so many problems and with BT infinity I chucked the hub to the side and spent the £90 for the Asus one. All the hubs have the same crappy software and you can't dig deep into them.

I've looked online and the new hub gets good reviews though.

I'll buy a netgear, had one before and it never gave me any bother.

Do it. I couldn't even change my DNS host on them. I have had v1, v2 and the infinity one. I don't regret changing it.

I was under the impression and with the way BT market it that with infinity you had to use the new homehub.

Glad thats not the case.

The HH3 is fine but it's not worth the money.

The only problem I seem to have with mine is that every couple of weeks or so it loses sync to the Infinity modem, and I need to reset it to reestablish the internet connection. Another problem is, if you opt into the BT wifi thing (that allows you to use BT hotspots around the country), the extra wifi signal seems to weaken the main wifi signal since they're on the same channel.

Have you tried this:

Just to point out that the BT-Fon function is now opt-out, not opt-in, and you can't disable it in the HH3 yourself - you have to put in a request to BT, following which they will deactivate it with varying degrees of speed and urgency. If you don't cancel it, but simply switch to a different router, you still get access to the BT wi-fi hotspots, but of course your own router will no longer act as a hotspot for other people.

The HH3 is OK if it came free with your package and it meets your needs, but I certainly wouldn't buy one, let alone for £55 - I've seen brand new or barely used ones go for around a tenner at a well-known auction site.

Buy a decent router. HH won't let you delve into the settings when you need it, and I found the wireless on the HH3 I used to have, well, sub-par. It requires resetting sometimes as well.

Best routers I've used were DrayTek Vigor, but I think they're expense. I'd be tempted by the Cisco/Linksys routers OcUK stock. Pick the one you need in terms of coverage and gigabit connectivity etc. Can't say I've used them though, so someone may have a better suggestion from experience.
