BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

No it's not "end to end fibre system", that's complete tosh.

It uses COAX to your house, BT uses a copper pair, Both have fibre running to the green cabs respectively.

Yup Coax in into your house but this makes very little difference at the moment as the COAX is 1,000,000 times better than twisted pair ! Virgin have the ability to do Fibre to the modem in the not to distant future but the Coax will still support a lot more than twisted pair ever will. + its a lot shorter than BT's twisted pair

will BT let a normal broadband customer upgrade their existing homehub?
is it free or cost money, i can only see deals including packages
my folks are still on the oriignal plastic white standup box homehub, which i think is a 1.0

now aparently the 3.0 has been released, is this a better option? how does one change?

Thing is BT have FTTP on the cards too, I would prefer to go with virgin, but It can be a post code lottery on the quality of service you will get.

i seem to have found a Trend with this.... I have suggested this to 3 people now and each time it has worked, they have had problems with there modem dropping out and service a bit iffy, i also had the same but i got a good engineer one day come out and it turned out to be my Signal was way to high yet 2 engineers prior to this guy never picked up on it. he sorted the signal strength out and ever since it was fine i then suggested to some friends and family who where suffering the same to get a engineer out and ask him about signal strength they tested they fixed they solved. not saying its every ones problem but the engineer i had said its pretty common and the modems cra*p out if the signal is too strong. worth a shot if you are having trouble as it solved mine and other perfectly

I think this is a case of everyone posting the negatives and no positives. Personally my connection has been live for a just over a week and I've not had to touch my equipment since first set up. Furthermore the speed is exactly the same.

Hi All

I can't seem to get a straight answer out of BT so here I am. From what I understand there's two things BT Fon and BT Openzone. Am I right in thinking these are separate? Can I opt out of BT Fon and still use a BT Openzone hotspot? Also, with the most expensive infinity option do I get any free Openzone minutes so if I'm at an airport I can use the hotspot there?

I'm not a BT customer. but...

They are two separate things.

BT Openzone is chargeable WiFi from BT in popular places. Train stations, airports, etc. It has been around for ages. Lots of people's smartphone contracts (my iPhone with O2 for example) include access to BT Openzone.

The Fon is a lot newer, and was recently bought by BT. It's premium chargeable - more expensive than normal BT Openzone, and a normal BT Openzone contract doesn't include it. Rather than being BT provided WiFi it's people allowing part of their domestic broadband for public use. "I'll let you use mine if I can use yours".

What's ****ing annoying is lots of the BT Fon access points are broadcasting with the BT Openzone SSID... so people like me who have a BT Openzone subscription connect to it as it's calling itself BT Openzone but then once connected find out it's actually BT Fon and can't actually do anything on it as BT want more money  .

Thanks for that so basically if I become part of Fon I can use these other Fon hotspots for free but as they are people's based hotspots I would never find one at an airport anyway.

This really, I've been checking BFBC2 every day in peak since I posted here a week or so ago and could access the server selection fine, seems it's isolated cases, definitely get someone in to look at the lines as something is not normal. The only thing that worried me was my speed dropped to about 28mbps, so by about 10mbps, but that was because I'm restricted to wireless, always get full speeds via ethernet.

This is my speed today with infinity.

Download speedachieved during the test was - 1332 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12000-38717 Kbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is -38717 Kbps

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 1263 Kbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10000 Kbps

Sounds Like there is a problem with routing on the BT network. I have a ADSL2 line form BT Business, and also a FREE TALK TALK ADSL2+ connections for back-up. I too have had problems with this over the last few days. Today being a problem in downloading the new Map Pack for PS3 on COD Black Ops for my lad. Won't down load on BT but has done on the TalkTalk connection!!!!

I just hope that this problem is to do with the work being done for the up coming FTTC upgrade that is due to go live in Sept. The BT guys have been running the new Fiber Optic cables from the exchange to the Cabs this last few days and still more to do next week.

I was chatting to two BT Openreach guys who were installing new COPPER Pairs in to one box for the links to NEW CABS they were putting in for the FTTC upgrade and it sounds like some of the cabling in the area is ALUMINIUM which is crap when it comes to DSL/VDSL2+ as the cable is very lossy.

Just hope the 30Mbps DL and 7Mbps UL that I have being given from BT Wholesale is good. I am only 250m from our street Cab. ONLY TIME WILL TELL LoL.

Cheers guys

Still having issues with BFBC2.

Last time I tried was after 12am and it worked first time this week.

I though it was just a login issue, but now during peak time and traffic shapping I cannot get the server browser to load!

:(

These muppets will be speaking to me tomorrow as this is unacceptable.

I so want BT Infinity naw :( God, who knows what year will my rural area get that. I've prolly had finished uni by then and have babies.

Be glad you don't suffer a REIN issue..

This happens if someone in a mile radius turns on something that spews out electrical noise. Could be anything from a hairdryer to an arc welder. Driving me insane. Literally giving me anxiety problems.

That's a 2MB drop, until the device is switched off.. in which I'm left with a 15dB margin and a massively slower speed.

Ok, not so much anxiety but you shouldn't have to worry about when you'll get a disconnect, or checking router stats expecting to see a problem every day.

Frigging annoying. The longest uptime I've had since the line went live is 90hrs (~4 days). It's laughable.

Speaking to some muppet in India 'from' BT.

Trying to tell me there is no issue. They want to put me through to the BT Home helpdesk, which is a paid for service!

I can see this is not go going to get resolved.

So no more BFBC2 for me then it seems and most probably no BF3 if it works the same.

:(

Edit*

Got through to a supervisor in the end.

Reset the modem and router (not turned it off, but reset) and they are going to monitor my line for the next 3 days, and ask me if my BFBC2 issues still remain.

I mentioned to them also about the ridicoulous situtation that exists when trying to download from the Adobe flash website, and obviously they completly reject that the 2Kb/s speeds could have anything to do with BT and it rather an Adobe issue!

Pure BS! Speeds where super high with all other isps except BT.

He also said, that on a weekly basis the homehub (not sure if he meant the modem as well) should be turned off for 2-3 hours....
