BT Internet Problems

Have been having an ongoing problem with my BT connection since just before Christmas with constant pauses of up to 2-3 minutes while doing anything on the internet.

Loading a web page might be fine one minute and then clicking a link might also load fine. But try the same links or webpage again and the connection times out or loads half the page and then stops doing anything at all.

I can forget streaming video or music of any kind as it will only buffer so far and then the connection will just seem to hang. Similarly gaming is out of the question with pings sitting around 100ms then spiking up to 15,000+. My connection wont drop out but no information comes in or goes out during that time.

BT are saying there is nothing wrong with my line and that the problems must be with my wireless network but streaming anything between computers is fine and i even went as far as to wire everything on the network and the problem still persists.

I dont know enough about these sort of things to have it out over the phone with BT so was hoping someone here might be able to shed some light on my problem or help.

Have you been having an crackling or noise on the telephone line?

Where abouts is the internet connected to? Extensions/Main Socket?

No noticable crackle on the line and the problem occurs if the router is connected to either the main line or the extension in th bedroom (currently connected there as it gives best wireless signal to whole house). Like i say it has only started acting up in the last month or so and I havent changed anything in the houe which might affect it.

This would require me to pop open the Main box and disconnect the extension line? It is hard wired and fed upstairs.

Is anyone using STEAM on your connection? theres a compatibility issues with BT and STEAM during traffic managed periods - tho this usually only happens between 5pm and midnight if you exceed the fair useage amount in a month.

Nope. Steam is only installed on my PC but on my vista partition which is very rarely used. This problem happens at all times of the day and with all PC's in the house.

Reading around the internet (painfully slowly) it seems the Downstream Noise Margin is a little low? It is the same if i connect to the master socket or the extension.

Latency type Interleaved Possibly indicates poor line conditions but some ISPs enable it by default

Noise margin (Down/Up) 6.1 dB / 21.0 dB 6db will be target this doesn't itself indicate problem

Line attenuation (Down/Up) 29.0 dB / 15.5 dB Looks good

Output power (Down/Up) 19.8 dBm / 12.1 dBm Normal

Loss of Framing (Local) 0

Loss of Signal (Local) 0

Loss of Power (Local) 0

FEC Errors (Down/Up) 314035 / 39 Quite a lot of errors but not enough to be concerning based on the uptime

CRC Errors (Down/Up) 1273 / 2147480000 Known bug not actually errors

HEC Errors (Down/Up) nil / 21

Error Seconds (Local) 591 Slightly concerning - could explain the times its "stalling"

Stats look slightly noisey but nothing that out the ordinary for your average 1.8-3Km connection.

Your problem to me sounds like an engineer needs to do the old "lift n shift" at the exchange - which is basically the equivalent of WD40 :D

Not too sure a lift n shift would solve the issue, it might do but I'd expect to see some dropouts or low sync if this was the issue.

Have you got another router to try? Have you tried doing the BT speedtest by logging your router into speedtester@speedtest_domain and browsing to speedtester.bt.com?

By doing those to above you are in effect proving the fault off your local end, and your SP's end (BT). This should be enough for BT to take it a bit more seriously...

Yeah the "stalling" effect is exactly what im experiencing whenever using the internet on the PC's. The weird thing is our BT Vision Box will stream OD stuff flawlessly but Youtube for example will stutter and die after about 1 min.

Will try the Speed Test suggested by Scottland. Just a question how do i log my router into BT Speed test?

Cheers for the help guys ^^

If the extension is wired into the main box - is it connected in before the microfilter? also even if the extension is connected after the microfilter(s) try putting one on the end of any long extension before the phone - it _shouldn't_ make any difference but for me it meant no more picking up interference from my neighbours shortwave (ham) radio - even tho we have a filtered faceplate before the extension. (ring wire isn't present).
