Hey all,

Having a nightmare with BT at the mo. For most of the year I've been downloading at a speed of 150kbps, which is pretty rubbish for our line, but whatever, I could deal with that. But 2 weeks ago, that all went out the window and speeds dropped to 15kbps. Painful!

So the process began of calling BT and finding out what the hell is going on. So we go through the usual steps... 1) unplug everything else, i.e. sky and see if it's faster, 2) attach router to main wall socket, 3) try a non-wireless connection, 4) check to see if I'm being capped, 5) test the line in our apartment, 6) test the line in the exchange... all of which did nothing. I wasn't being capped, oUr line test shows that I should get speeds of up to 600kbps.

The technician then decides that it's our router. We had a 3com wireless router. So we're now trying *** router as supplied by BT. But he says it'll take up to 10 days for it to sync properly and for speeds to increase. I think it's total BS, but whatever. We're now into day 2 and I'm still getting speeds of 15kpbs. It's not just one site. It's anything I try downloading. Itunes, Newsleecher, files from http sites, etc.

Does anyone have any ideas of what might be going on or suggestions of what to do? I appreciate you reading and helping with this! Thanks in advance.

The BT speedtest doesn't work. It never has while we've been living here. It just says "The page cannot be found". Is there an alternative that might reveal the same kind of info?

Other speedtests show the same thing though - the results usually indicate that we're getting a speed equivalent to a 0.2mb line, i.e. 200k, which is the same speed as dual ISDN. Obviously this is not acceptable.

Your ISP should be able to give your IP profile - that's the important bit, any speedtest like that is completely useless.

I don't know, but apparently the technician who was here said that when you put in a new router, it'll take up to days for you to get top speeds. Sadly I'm still stuck at 15kbps.

What info is entailed within an IP profile?
