BT limiting our connection

Hi,

Currently we're connecting at 768Kbps, but limited to downloading at only 30KB/s - this limit is applied to browsing, HTTP downloads, Usenet etc.

I ran the test at speedtester.bt.com and it says our line is configured for 250Kbps and we're currently getting 190Kbps.

They have no reason to limit us, we're on their top package. I've been monitoring it for 8 months now and we've not used over 50GB.

We live pretty far away from the exchange which is why we only get 768Kbps, but I know for a fact this line can handle at least 60KB/s.

Has anybody got a non-Indian run contact number I can use to sort this out please? They keep trying to take me through the basic "which lights are on?", "do you have a microwave running?" etc.

I've currently got the 0800 111 4567 number which I'll call now and try get the Indian people to understand me (I've got nothing against them, I know they're just trying to earn a living, but I seriously can't understand them most of the time). Wish me luck.

Thanks,
Craig

If your IP profile's set to 250kbps, it's got nothing to do with your ISP (other than it's them you need to bug to get it reset if needs be).

As suggested, make sure your sync rate isn't fluctuating because it will affect your IP profile. It has nothing to do with being reduced for stability though - it won't do a thing to the stability of your connection.

Yep, it goes down in the rain, after it goes down it connects back at about 200Kbps and we're back on a 250Kbps IP profile. Yay.

We've had engineers out here at least 5 times and they 'can't do anything' about it.

It's sorted for now, they've increased my line profile back to 500Kbps

Sounds like you need this changed. I'm guessing they did that for a reason though.

I know :p

I was asking for a decent phone number that employs English people :p

Why are you with BT surely even Plusnet would be better if the exchange is not "opened up"

Trust me, I wouldn't be with BT if it was up to me, but my Dad wants to stay with them. I think we're in a contract, not sure.

I'm fully aware of the problem with the line, I was just asking for a decent number I could use to call them.

I'll ring them after midnight next time the problem occurs, maybe I'll be lucky :)

You're right, there is no chance of the problem getting fixed, the line from the exchange to us is crap and the exchange is probably crap as well. Nothing short of replacing all the equipment would fix the problems.

I'll just phone them every time the line is put back on a 250Kbps profile. When I mentioned the BT speedtester she knew what I was on about, asked me the results I was given etc., so it wasn't too bad.

*sigh* We're been limited back down to a 350Kbps line profile again, even though it was perfectly stable on 500Kbps. It hasn't gone down or slowed down once all day.

Time to try the 0808 number they gave me with the pin I guess :(
