i am looking to move from virgin to bt / o2 broadband

I don't currently have a bt phone line or master socket.

currently all my cat5 network cables terminate in the loft (the current location of my cable modem and router)

i was thinking the loft is the best place for the master socket?

any advice appreciated

The problem's going to be persuading BT to put it there. Technically I doubt it's an issue - mine's under the floor!

No technical reason why not, getting the BT engineer to stick it there might be a different matter.

That said, at work we had the guy crawling round our roof space to run cables from one end of the building to the other and it wasn't a problem.

The engineer will only put the master socket within 3 metres of where the phone line actually comes into the house, so unless this is in the loft then you might have a problem.

my house has the line connected to one of them hook things thats screwed in to the wall and thats right by the loft it then runs down the front to the front room

Mine was originally down near our front door when we moved in, soon as everyone had been to test (Sky & BT) i moved the master socket into the loft and then reconnected everything.

Wouldnt expect the BT bloke would want to mess about up in a loft unless its easy access and all boarded out but you can always ask, if its no no then just move it yourself later.

Moving the master socket would be a Really Bad idea, not to mention illegal.

It's not against the law, at worst you'd get a civil suit from BT, but there is pretty much zero chance of them finding out (unless you balls it up and short your line card in the exchange or somthing, even then it's unlikely) they don't remember/know where in the house the socket was installed and the Openreach engineers don't much care either.

Actually it's BT's property you're tampering with, so it is illegal. Either way, it's
a) hardly worth fannying around with, given if you break it you're in a world of bother
b) not something to discuss on here...
