Out of the two, which is the better ISP to go with? Was pretty much set on going to BT Infinity 1 38Mbps, but I see Plusnet have the 76Mbps for the same price.

Any major reason not to go for the faster connection, especially with it having 20Mbps upload?

Of those two I'd choose PlusNet, in fact I've been with PlusNet for years.

Don't forget to check the cashback sites for offers.

Sky are also worth a look.

Yeah BT has better cashback via QuidCo, just need to work out what's best over the 12/18 months. We're with Sky now and not impressed. Plus I may to use the odd torrent here and there so would prefer to not be with Sky...

I moved from BT to Plusnet myself last year.

You basically get a cheaper price with Plusnet. I save £10 a month with the 76Mbps package from Plusnet and that is why I switched to them.

This is my thoughts right now, but I'm not keen on an 18 month contract, especially if I go with them and for whatever reason I have a bad experience.

BT's USPs are the good cashback and prepaid card as you say, but many people thus far this year have reported problems getting their cashback from BT...

Not going to lie; I know more Mbps isn't everything but I dare say 76Mbps would be nice over the 38Mbps, and the 20Mbps would really be useful for Google drive syncs. Working it out though plusnet seems more expensive than BT, but I need to double check...

What you're saying is beyond misinformed.

Sky don't prevent you from torrenting or restrict speeds on p2p or anything else for that matter. Every single UK ISP is subject to court orders from rights holders, Sky was one of the few who went to court and argued for it's customers rights repeatedly at every available level domestically, others gave it up without a fight. As to the UK domain blockade against certain sites it affects Sky, BT, TalkTalk,VM and others, you'd have to be living under a rock not to know by now how easily it's avoided. Ironically despite being owned by BT, Plusnet haven't joined yet but it's probably only a matter of time.

Go and research VPN's or cloud based p2p services if you wish to avoid the world knowing what you are downloading (legal or otherwise), but don't slate the very ISP's who should be congratulated on taking a stand even when users are naive enough not to protect themselves.

Oh and BT's Quidco is usually better at the start of the month than the end, they adjust it depending on how close they are to target.

Thanks for the advice, but please don't have a go just because I'm not some networking/ISP expert.

I'm trying to read and get up to speed but I was under the impression that Sky had been legally forced to hand over details of customers downloading illegal stuff to and external firm with a court order. I've obviously misunderstood the situation.

Like said above, I'm misinformed, I know I need to read up on the situation, and reinvestigate the use of a VPN.

Plusnet 38 might only be 2Mbps up, but their higher 76 package is 20Mbps up. Something g that is important to me for cloud backup syncs etc.

Every single UK based ISP is subject to the same legal requirements, now rights holders have been green lit to issue speculative invoices then users *need* to start taking privacy seriously. If users have the sense to do that then practically all other considerations cease to be relevant other than plusnet's 40/2 package vs everyone else's 40/10 and price/service.

Understood. I'll research which VPN service is good that I can quickly enable when needed. If I were to go plusnet, I'd be going for the 76Mbps package, as the 2Mbps upload is not sufficient.

OK, so I need to decide which to go for tonight as Sky have screwed us over completely (long story).

I've worked out (assuming it's 12 monthly payments, rather than per 28 days) that BT would cost about £2 more per month, assuming my cashback from Quidco fails for whatever reason. If I do get the £120 cashback for signing up to BB+calls, it'll be about £8 per month cheaper than plusnet.

Even if the cashback fails, or BT refuse to pay out, I'm tempted to pay £24 more over the year so that I'm not tied to an 18 month contract instead of 12.

Daft logic? How reliable is quidco and BT for paying cashback? Got good reliability rating but the recent reviews for BT paying out cashback are not great...

How have Sky screwed you over? Quidco are quite reliable as long as you follow the obvious stuff like not following a link from another source etc. If BT is cheaper for you then go with BT, the HH5 isn't my favorite bit of hardware but they fetch £30 a go on Gumtree quite easily or you can run it in modem only mode - it works OK for some people.

Long story, but they confirmed 14 days before the end of contract that they would cut us off and that we would in fact go to a rolling contract. Instead, we woke up yesterday to no internet or landline and they are refusing to acknowledge that we contacted them, despite going via chat and also the 150 number, and have refused to give us the £49 to cover the activation fee now need to reactivate the line.

Regarding the BT HH; I'll be using a dedicated router regardless, I just haven't decided on whether I'm going to put the HH into modem only mode, or replace it entirely with a decent VDSL router. This is another reason I've favoured BT/PlusNet over Sky so that I have more hardware choice.

On a similar note, but do ex Sky folk do with the Skyhub? Will it sell for anything or should I just take it to a recycling centre?

Went for BT. Line rental paid for up front.

No activation fee, no fee to set up line either.
£25 per month, but my £120 quidco is being tracked, and will be getting £50 M&S voucher from sky for their **** up, and £50 from BT. Will work out about £20 per month once all the expenses are averaged out. Can't complain at that!
