I do think this may be in the wrong section, but seemed like the place to put it...

Just moved out with the missus, and we have two BT PSTN (phone sockets) in the house.

We rang BT twice last week and told them we require these lines to be re-activated, to which they said they was no record of a phone line being at this address.

They then said that we would have to pay £125.00 for a engineer to come out, fix up a new line and connect it up. To which in the end we agreed to and BT are booked to come on the 22nd Aug.

My question is, I can clearly see two BT phone sockets on the wall, clearly labeled BT, Is they any other way I can prove to them that the phone lines are actually physically there? We do not know the old/phone number of the sockets so all we can really do is give BT our address.

I was wondering if they was some sort of serial, code, method we can do to show that the lines are actually there, and we infact dont have to pay a full installation fee?

Cheers

When i called them to get my line reactivated they asked if there is a dial tone when you picked up the phone, when i said yes the guy seemed happy and continued with the sub.

I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but hope this helps a little.

Not yet tried a phone in the socket, Would they be a dial tone even if the prior person who lived there cancelled the line?

I think someone on here mentioned something about offers that they do. Cant remeber exactly what they said but they called up and said they want to be reconnected under the special offer. And got it for £25.

You will have to search the forum in here for exactly what he said.

But if there is a dialtone then they wont charge you full £125.

£29.99 if you get in this month i believe. that's what i just paid.

*edit actually they asked me if i was switching providers before they offered 29.99 i said yes but they don't take any further details (or didn't in my case) provided when they ask if you want to keep your number you just say nah give me a new one.

There it is

Taken from there price page for the offer

This Special Offer is available to eligible residential customers between 1st July 2008 and 30th September 2008 (inclusive) who agree to take Unlimited Weekend Plan, Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan, or Unlimited Anytime Plan for a minimum period of 18 months.

The important thing is whether the line is still connected at the exchange. It makes no difference whether there are sockets in the house. As has been previously said, if there is a dial tone there will be no charge, but if not then there will be a charge.

I used the special offer to get a bt line, when requesting conection they asked if there was a line from the house to the wooden telephone pole outside.

it took their engineer approximately 2-3 hours to connect a new line to the house

I just beat them down till they gave it to me for £30 tbh, before the offer was on.
it's sick how they can do that

Tell Me about it. Rang BT said connect me please there is a dial tone but cannot call out not even 150. They said no problem that will be £30 or something around that. Come connection day BT man phones me from the exchange and says oh your lines working then (and had been for nearly a week). I thought nothing of it untill the bill came £175 for installation of a new line!! I was like WTF and screamed myself blue at the indian lady on the phone untill she cut me off. The next guy i spoke to was no more help full and i ended up telling them where they could stick there phone and that they would not be getting a penny from me.

So far i have not tried the phone again and dont intend to as my GF and i both have mobiles and have free mins to everyone we know i have an arrangement with the guy next door and share his o2 broadband that he only pays £7.50 a month for.

Job done BT can go **** themselves it realy takes the michael that they can charge somuch for so little service!

Revive this thread.

Due to have a engineer come to my house today to setup a phone line. I checked the BT box that is already present in my house with the phone number BT gave me, and it rings & I can ring out & have already ordered my broadband and everything is going okay.

Question is, BT told me that it would cost me £125 to get it re-activated and send a engineer out, but clearly I don't need an engineer to come to my house as its already working. Where do I stand on this? as I don't wanna fork out £125 if I dont need to.
