Im in the market for a new router and I have narrowed it down to these two:

I have a few requirments:

Not bothered about easy setup stuff (I like to tinker)
Must have a DMZ
Must have VPN support
Ideally IDS and good firewall
Must have NAT / Port Forwarding
Ideally Wireless G & N

The linksys:

Has everything I need VPN,NAT,DMZ apart from supporting Wireless G & N at the same time. Advantage is its tenner cheaper. Its also Gigabit NW which will support my Belkin powerline adapters (although they wont reach 1gbps 'another thread im sure') but an advantage over the NetGear.

The Netgear:

Seems a good quality router, has a big advantage over the linksys in that it CAN do Wireless G & N at the same time. Ticks all my other requirments with regards to VPN,NAT,DMZ. 100 mpbs network only though.

I will be using 2 xPS3s and two Pcs through Powerline and a Wireless Laptop. The PS3s are Wireless G and the Laptop is Wireless G or N.

Does anyone have any experience if these? Any Thoughts?

I have the WAG320 and it does a mixed mode for wifi so you can run B/G/N at the same time or are you talking about something else

I would be persuaded towards netgear as a brand. Linksys stuff has always been awful for me for both hardware and software.

@EVEREX:

Thanks for the info. I had prior read this review http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/wireless-routers/274303/linksys-wag320n and it has said it would not do mixed mode wireless. They obviously got the facts wrong (or before FW update). I think the Linksys is the one I might go for, how has it been performing for you, whats the range linke within an avarage house with wireless G?

@dovey: Yep take on board what you say, I have had similar experience in the past, howver given the net backbone is built upon Cisco gear I may be persuaded to give them another try. Reviews for the Linksys router seem quite positive as well.

Cheers Chaps!

can't really comment on range just yet for G as my laptop has broke so can't go round the house but everything on the ground floor is getting an excellent signal from pc xbox and wii which are in other rooms

The WAG320N supports b/g/n at the same time.... but it is not a "simultaneous dual-band" router i.e. cannot use 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz at the same time. Therefore any N devices are slowed to G speeds when B/G devices are used.

It's impossible to find a modem router with gigabit ethernet, 2.4Ghz + 5Ghz dual band!! arggh!

Arhh! I see. Cheers for the clarification. So I think I will go for this one, only other query I think I need to sort is if it will handle 2 or 3 VPN connections.

thats not true. you can use N devices at N speed with G devices connected @ 2.4Ghz.

EDIT: i have a wag320n

that doesnt matter, go read about the two, you'll see that atheros has come on in leaps and bounds since the early days.

it still doesnt have the feature set. either way what ever your buying then go for it ;) who am i to say what you want, its my opinion only.

I have the Linksys, it's ok, internal network performance through the wire or wireless seems good.

However it did knock almost a meg off my connection speed dropping me to 5 meg from 6 meg.

Whilst annoying I mainly bought it for the gig ethernet and wireless N so happy enough, not really going to miss that meg :)

And as said you can run G and N devices together fine, each working at their respoective speeds, just that you can't run 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands at the same time.

Also firewall is a basic on/off job with only a couple of extra options, would have been nice to have configurable rules like the Zyxel it replaced.
