BT smart hub

I think as general rule of thumb, most people regard ISP supplied routers as being sub-par. I guess it depends how much people want to "tinker" with their setups. Most people just want out of the box PnP.

I have just been browsing the BT community forums and it does seem that the Smart Hub has issues, however nobody is going to post if they don't have issues.

True but you could say there might be loads of people having problems who dont use forums.

Thing is from HH3 they have improved quite dramatically upto the point of the HH5 where you really dont need another router unless you want to tinker. Wifi could have been better but it is a smart piece of kit. So when the HH6 came out it had higher expectations and at first it was brilliant. For me it went downhill with the June 2016 firmware release.

Only thing I am a bit narked about it is I'm a long term BT triallist and I missed out on the HH6 trial through being on holiday.

I even had an Asus AC68U for a bit but it doesnt play ball well with BT TV Internet channels on Ultra HD Boxes so went back to HH5.

My BT Infinity is being activated tomorrow and I received the BT Smart Hub Type - A today. It's quite large! I hope it does a decent job...

The ethernet switch on my HH6/Smart Hub is much slower than my HH5 Type A. I get about 6-7MB/sec with the Smart Hub when copying files from one PC to another (across two powerline adapters), but I get about 17-19MB/sec when using the HH5 across the same link.

I have read the HH6 doesnt play well with powerline adaptors and BT dont recommend them (mainly to do with BT TV) thats why BT give you about 5-6 metres of ethernet cable with the HH6.

I'm using my BT powerline adaptors that I got with my BT HH4 a few years ago with the HH6 without problem. After all this discussion I am contemplating setting up my asus router for wired connections in conjunction with the HH6.

With BT TV though ? Ultra HD ?

BT smart hub has been much better at my house than the HH5. The 5 could even get wifi to my garage properly and even with an extender it was flaky. The Smart hub gives me great signal down there and I've given the extender away.

The only down side is sometimes the 2.4ghz band doesn't connect straight away and takes about 15 seconds longer than normal. Always connects in the end though and ive never had to reboot it.

Nope I'm with Sky for TV I can get a max download of 40 Mbps down over powerline which is not bad.

That makes the difference because BT doesnt recommend powerlines for their TV, thats what I was referring to if you read my post. Also depends on the electric wiring in your house being really good.

I'm also getting Infinity installed next and am probably going to go for an Openreach modem as I already use an RT-N66U with Virgin. What kind of Openreach modem do I need?

There are only two, Huawei and ECI, both of which which are only available secondhand. Either will work, but most people would prefer the Huawei.

Why have you written off the supplied router without trying it? Do you have specific requirements you know not to be supported?

The N66U is now quite an old model (no wireless AC, limited CPU). It's still okay, but on paper at least the modern BT supplied kit is better.

Interesting as it was BT who supplied me with the powerline adapters that I currently use and it was for use with their tv!

Same for my parents, they assumed the box would have WiFi but then got BT powerline adapters for it. They've never had any problems either.

I was referring to UltraHD TV and also it does depend on the wiring in your house. For me powerline adaptors are rubbish.

Note that you can't use Broadband Extenders if you've got Ultra HD. You'll need to use an Ethernet cable to connect your YouView+ Ultra HD box to your Hub.

Thanks. Alright, I'll try the HH.

Got sent one when they came out, couldn't use it until a couple of months ago because there was a design flaw where a user connecting to a VPN would make it reboot however they fixed that with a firmware update.

Best feature is you can enable/disable the router lights via a schedule.

Amazingly I tried my HH6 again and has finally got the latest firmware update and so far its been okay. I've only one wifi gadget having problems with it. Doesnt mean much but so far its lasted longer than it has in the past.
