BT Socket Wiring

So I've just moved into a new flat and my broadband went "live" yesterday - or so you'd think.

After various diagnostic stuff with BT and their promise to "get back to me" I decided to have a little look inside the BT socket.

I think I found the problem...

Whatever utter helmet has lived here before me has decided to cut the cables in the BT socket. The two connected wires, perfectly clean cut... ARGH!

BT are not currently answering their phones, however I believe that upon hearing this information they will suck in air through their teeth and tell me its going to cost me a kidney and a limb of my choice to get an engineer out to fix it.

I am half tempted to try it myself as it looks like I just need an impact punch tool and a small amount of luck however I know there are legaility issues surrounding this.

Any advice?

If the wires inside the socket are "clean cut", then it must follow that your telephone dosn't work either ?
If that's the case, then BT couldn't have done any checks on your line.

Depends on what has been cut.

If it's the incoming AB, then that connected to the back of the NTE5 on 2 screw terminals.
If it the internal wiring, they go to the punch downs on the back of the NTE5 plate. If it is these that have been cut, then this should not stop your internet or phone working if you plug into the NTE5. If you are trying an extension socket elsewhere int he house, it may not work.

If you pop the lower half of the NTE5 off and plug a phone into the socket at the bottom, do you get a ring tone? If not, I wouldn't touch it as the problem is BT's side of the NTE5 and you are not supposed to play.
If you do, plug you router in and see if it syncs.

Correct.

Get BT to sort it, & it's shouldn't cost you a penny, just don't tell them you have taken it apart, otherwise you will be charge.

Be very careful with BT as they may just charge you anyway and it'll cost you over £100 for them just to splice in a little extra wire and hook it back up. They may decide you are liable anyway, and after all it's not like they cut the wires.

I'd just go ahead and join it myself and if you ever need them out in the future for an actual fault tell them it was always like that.
