My dad is looking at kicking his Sky subscription into touch because of the recent price increase and I've suggested Sky Fibre at £15 p/m compared to the £12.50 p/m that Sky would want for their broadband if he doesn't continue with the TV package!

Anyway, I understand you get BT Sport 1 & 2 as well as ESPN but I'm wondering if you have to have an active Sky subscription to actually watch via your TV?

There's three ways to watch BT Sport.

On Sky, on BT TV (YouView or Vision+), or online via mobile app or website.

To watch on Sky you don't need to have BT Broadband. If you do have BT Broadband it's free, if you don't then it's £12 per month with £15 set-up.

To watch on YouView or Vision+ you must have BT Broadband. BT Sport is then free.

To watch online or on-app you must have BT broadband. BT Sport is then free.

So BT Sport is basically a rouse to get more broadband subscriptions. The channels will still be plastered with tonnes of adverts netting them all the revenue they need.

OK, so what if you DO have BT Broadband but don't have an active Sky subscription?

Will the Sky box still let you watch the free-to-air channels and therefore will let you watch BT Sport 1 & 2 and ESPN?
I'm sure the setup asks you for a viewing card number, which my dad obviously has but what happens when he cancels his Sky subscription?

You can have Sky (and a viewing card) without a monthly subscription: via Freesat from Sky. I think it's around £170 one off if you don't have sky already. If you already have equipment then I think you can just get a viewing card sent out for a nominal fee.

However I'm not sure if Sky will actually let you have add-on channels on freesat. Probably best to call them and ask: http://www.sky.com/shop/freesat/home/
