BT to Virgin Media - A few questions

About five minutes ago I thought, right, I'll have another bash at trying to find out why my BT broadband is so ridiculously slow. I tried this socket test, but it doesn't matter. It didn't make a blind bit of difference so I came on here and saw a huge amount of threads to do with BT's poor service. So I'm hoping to cancel my service with them.

I just wanted to ask, for the first week when I was upgraded to up to 8Mbps I was getting ~450KB/s download constantly. Now it's ~50KB/s on a good day. And obviously I'd like that to change.

What should I expect from a Virgin Broadband up to 8Mbps package? And also, which would be the simplest one to switch over to quickly and efficiently?

Thanks for any help. :)

Samknows is telling me that I can recieve upto 1Mbps from BT now. I had 4.5Mbps for a week or so, surely it can't have gone down?

Assuming you're talking about VM ADSL, rather than cable:

Depends what's causing the slowdown. Potentially, exactly the same.

Possibly - it's only an estimate. Sync rate/attenuation/SNR margin? Output from BT Speedtest?

Anything speed related should have the results posted from here: http://speedtester.bt.com (include your sync, profile and actual throughput.)

I will still advice not to go to Virgin Media ADSL. Very poor service when I was with them 6 months ago. Looks like they haven't improved things either.

Oh right. :(

I've just seen people on here in similar situations as me, then switching and getting decent speeds constantly.

I got this from doing the BT Speedtester:

Test Results

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 1024 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 450 kbps

Oh, and I did the test that bypasses the house wiring and I still got very poor speeds.

If the best it can manage is 1024kbps, it might not manage home1000.

Attenuation/SNR margin/sync rate from the router would be useful.

I don't get this though, before the upto 8Mbps rate adaptive service was introduced, I was rock solid stable at 2.2Mbps. Then I got 4-6Mbps for a week when I upgraded to upto 8Mbps, about a year ago now and it's been shocking since.

Sorry, but I don't know what the following mean, or where I'd find them: 'Attenuation/SNR margin/sync rate' .

Thanks for the help so far, really appreciate it.

See the FAQ, or if you post your router model, someone might know how to get them.

What I did when my profile dropped was bought a secondhand speedtouch modem and used DMT tool to establish the fastest connection possible.

Ended up going from a normal sync of 1312kbps Down 448kbps UP to 2048kbps 448kbps :)

Ok, so not quite 2MB but at least a high 1.5Mb connection for the sake of a couple of quid.
