BT Total Broadband Router settings?

can you use a 3rd party router with BT total broadband?

What are the correct settings?

Are these correct:
Logon username: Created when setting up your account - example: [email protected]
Logon password: No password is required, as BT uses the phone number you're connecting via for authentication. If your router needs one, use "BT"
Encapsulation: PPPoA or PPP over ATM
15,800.00 VC-based or VC Mux
VPI/VCI: 0/38
BT Broadband Primary DNS address: 62.6.40.162
BT Broadband Secondary DNS address: 194.72.0.98
Incoming POP email server: mail.btinternet.com
Outgoing SMTP email server: mail.btinternet.com (Sending email requires SMTP server authentication - you need to enter your BT Broadband account's username and password as well as your SMTP address)

Yes, you can use a 3rd party router. Those settings all seem fine also.

I've only ever used third party routers with BT. They did send me a Home Hub a while back, for no apparent reason, but the box it came in is still sealed. Just bear in mind that if you call them up for Tech Support then they will not be able to give you any help with any problems you are having relating to your router. Given that their Tech Support usually amounts to telling you to switch the router off and on again anyway, this probably isn't much of a loss!

Those aren't the DNS addresses that my router gets when I tell it to obtain its DNS addresses automatically, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are wrong. I've seen numerous different DNS addresses for BT. You can also choose to use a different DNS, such as OpenDNS, if you prefer. The other settings look fine.

hi had a quick search on BTs site but cant see anything that relates to using a 3rd party router and the settings needed to connect to BT network.
I would just like the settings before i make the switch if anyone knows them be grateful if they can post them.

As I said, the settings you posted above are fine... For your username you can have [email protected] and anything as the password, the rest of the settings are spot on. If you're bothered about DNS servers, you can have your router obtain them automatically from the ISP; BTs DNS servers are generally fine for day to day use.
