Hi,

the in laws have been having problems with BT for a good year now (since he joined). Slow internet speeds day and night, BT call center have sent out engineers to have the line moved etc etc, plugged directly into master socket etc but still having no luck.

Could someone please have a look at the line stats below and tell me what sort of connect he should be getting?

The only other ISP in the area is Sky, but they have no room on the exchange so they say.

If you need anymore info please let me know.

Thanks

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 1440 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps <-------- WTF surely that's way too low?
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 80 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

No idea about line stats, I'm sure the experts will be along soon. How far away from the exchange are they (roughly)?

You are approximately 4.05km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!

Attenuation 63 = very rubbish line + rubbish speeds sadly.

I'd almost say that they'd be better off getting a 1mbit fixed speed line, assuming that still allows them to avoid the whole IP profile thing. Obviously the instability of the line is causing it to reconnect so much that the profile is setting itself so low.

Do they keep switching off the router, they should leave it on as it takes some time for the profile to rise. you should be getting more than a profile of 135 kbps.
I would have thought 1000 kbps would be more like it.

They might want to check and see if cable is available in the area.

I think the router is turned off at night, and no cable is available in the area.

How do I go about getting the profile to increase ?

Leave the router ON.

Annoys me the amount of people that go round turning stuff off

If you turn the BT routers off they think its a line fault and keep resetting the IP profile!! Always leave them on so they can over time report to BT the most stable line stats then their speeds will go up but as over 4Km from the exchange not sure how much more speed they will get anyway.

I think for the profile to rise it can take upto 48hrs and you will see that by running speedtester, but the router does need to remain on.

To raise the Sync speed the router needs to be on for over 14 days and then you need to restart it(I think). If all goes well the router will sync higher with a lower SNR, the profile may go down for a while but should sort itself out over the next 48 hrs.

The problem is if the line carn't take the higher sync it will restart itself and sync lower, again messing up the profile and if your really unlucky it can sync even lower than before.

Isn't the BT system wonderful.

If you haven't got a very good connection turning it off isn't a good idea.
If you have a stable line then you can get away with turning it off now and again.

I can only speak from my experience on a long line but the SNR never went down if the router was restarted within the 14 day period.
