Hi,

a mate of mine recently moved in in this flat, and i've never seen this before, wondering what it is ?
basically this black cable comes from outside and goes in this little old socket, and from this socket it goes in a very standard white bt socket, can someone please shed some light what the small socket is? we are trying to find out who the master socket is, there are no more sockets in the flat..

line is active with some crackling noise, is there any way he can get bt and get rid of both boxes and instead fit a new filtered master socket ?

It's just a junction box, is your other box not a standard BT master?

If there is noise on your voice line then ring BT and they will come and sort it (for free - as long as they can hear the noise when they turn up)

hi there,

thanks for the answer,

wiring in this flat is obviously old enough, apparently the other white bt socket is the master one.. it doesnt have a test entrance though and it looks in a bad state, we spoke to bt, and they ran some quick test and said everything is fine, so they are only coming if he pays some 100 + pounds which he is not going to do.

if he buys a filtered nte5 or adslnation filter plate will he be able to fit that eleminating both the junction socket and the other bt socket ?

Yes. Just use white & orange.

Contact 2: White 'A' wire
Contact 3: Green Earth wire
Contact 4: Black Bell wire
Contact 5: Orange 'B' wire

2:Blue with White Bands Speech and Ringing

3:Orange with White Bands Ringing

4:White with Orange Bands Not used but usually connected for neatness

5: White with Blue Bands Speech and Ringing

thanks for the clues.

basically as seen on the picture, it will be the black cable going into the new filtered socket: and we will have 4 wires to connect with slightly different colors from your description:

1: white
2: orange
3: black
4: green

are we still set with these wires and colors? and do we need any special tools for this, apart of the normal ones (screwdriver, knife etc)
sorry for the questions, but weve never done this before..

cheers m8,

he just bought these:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250850115993&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

and i have to do the fitting next week, holpefully its a good purchase and i will manage to fit without issues.

take care

Hopefully you wont have any issues, but please do note that the equipment you are looking to "replace" is BT property and if you do replace it and then have a fault BT will be within their rights to charge you to fix said fault, as it is against their T&Cs to replace, or even work on their sockets.

The set-up is the same in my house, I have a junction box just inside the house and then a "master" socket connected to that. This master socket is so old, but it works fine, so never felt the need to replace it.

Hi, that there be a "soap dish" as we call em', old stuff too

Now that black wire there the thick one that has O+W and G+B that there be dropwireeerrr, O+W are pair one and G+B are pair twoooo, Typically OW is line one and GB is line twooo, however not always the case

Simeple test, find the first socket that the internal wire is connected to and see what the A and B terminations are, that is the pair carying your DT and therefore which ever pair in the dropwire that is connected to will be your OH pair.

Enough info? (also i went a bit mad at the beggining of that post didnt i?) :P

i'm having bt infinity installed next wednesday.

regarding the above *old junction box* in the pictures.. do u guys think that if i ask the engineer on Wednesday to remove it and run a brand new filtered master socket directly from the main black wire, will he be able to do that ?

If it's Infinity for the flat he will have to anyway to ensure a good connection for the fibre modem. They will fit their own BT ADSL faceplate too for the connection.
