BT Yahoo speed issue + a question about IP addresses

I've got the option 3 BT Yahoo package (up to 8mb). I used to get around 3.5mb down speed. Over the last few days I've been getting approximately a 512kb/s down speed and 375kb/s up speed, measured from different speed test sites mostly in the evening. I get exactly the same results on the computer wired to my router and the wireless one and no settings have been touched on the router so I don't think the issue is at my end. I've also not used any file sharing programs for the last few days.

Before I phone the BT support line, which is a long and frustrating process, I thought I'd ask hear to see if anybody has any suggestions as to what it might be. I'm wondering if I've hit some 'fair usage' limit, but would that simply limit my speed?

My other question relates to IP addresses. I think I currently have a dynamic IP set by my ISP, I've noticed that this IP is not unique and it causes problems on certain websites that remember IP, I can't use a lot of free download sites that are IP time limited and the speed test sites have lots of suspiciously fast tests that I certainly don't remember. Is it accepted norm for ISPs to share IPs or can I take it up with my ISP?

What's your modem connecting at? Try the BT Speedtest (instructions in sticky) and get your IP profile from it too.

It's not abnormal for ISPs to use dynamic IP addresses, and BT don't have any option to get a static IP (without moving to their business service and paying through the nose). On the other hand, loads of (better) ISPs do offer static IPs if it's a big deal.

Thanks for the quick response ;)

I tried the BT speed tester earlier and after I typed my phone number and pressed 'go' it just said checking details on the progress bar and did nothing else for several minutes.

I can live with the dynamic IP but the main ground for not changing ISP for the last 3 years has been losing e-mail addresses, personally I think it is a silly reason but my Dad is absolutely hell bent on keeping his ISP e-mail address and AFAIK there is no way to keep your e-mail address and change ISP?

It depends on the ISP. Some will let you pay an amount to keep the email address going.

The BT Speedtest can be unreliable at times - the only answer is just to keep trying.

BT speed test still isn't working. My internet came back to full speed shortly after I posted last night and a speed test at 11.45pm last night an 9.45am this morning were both around 4mb, which seems it is looking more likely to be some peak time traffic management. Time to get on the phone then I guess
