BTCC 2015

Looks like a sort of Formula 4/Formula Ford hybrid. If it gets decent grid sizes then its a good thing.

Edit: There are 32 spaces on the 'Drivers' page, with 12 teams purchasing chassis! Yipes.

Excellent - should be a good watch then! Apparently the lower age limit is 15 so could get some impetuous guys in that little lot. Suspect that a first/second corner crash is going to be incredibly likely.

Started watching this in 2013 a bit, then a bit more last year. Think I'll follow every race this.

Why did they run the estate Honda's last year? Surely they knew they would be poor compared to their excellent performing Fn2 Civics?? Glad to see they've gone back to that.

What are the MG team running this year? They looked quite handy last year.

Not sure of the team/drivers names but the yellow/black Audi and a Merc with young drivers did quite well IIRC.

It was a marketing strategy by Honda. I imagine in the big picture getting some TV footage of the estate Civic on 2 wheels being hustled by 2 former BTCC champions is going to be far more successful at selling what is a god awful car than even the worlds best TV and traditional advertising campaigns.

And now that its done, they can move on to pimping the new Type R. Balance is restored :)

MG will be running the MG6 again but new colour scheme as Plate has moved to BMR.

They wanted to use the tourer for two reason. Honda wanted to advertise the new car, and they though it would provide more straightline speed. They had the IVTEC engine for the first time last year so that was being developed. Matt Neal had a shocker of a season so I expect he'll be on the pace this year providing they don't have any new new car teething issues.

The Merc was Adam Morgan whose family run Ciceley Racing team who has sponsors from WIX hence the yellow. They're the same this year but Aidan Moffat has made the swap from a chevvy cruze to the Merc that's been prepped by Ciceley for him and they're working together. He's got the best looking livery with his laser tools sponsorship I've seen so far this year but most of them will release them on media day.

The audi was Rob Austin Racing who is now more orange and black (hes used to have the WIX sponsorship but now has Exocet now as his main) runs a pair of A4's. They're a fan favourite but i think the new rules to slow down the rear wheel drive cars may hurt him the most.

Other big chances are the BMW's have lost the eBay sponsorship and its not been confirmed but I don't think tesco's are doing any backing this year. Last year the MG manufactures team had a mouthful of a title "MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save".

We've got a new manufacture backing this year in the form of Infiniti who are fun by Support Our Para's (Red Bull did some good stuff today for that team http://www.btcc.net/2015/03/18/infiniti-teams-join-forces-for-the-day/ ).
Other big moves are Motorbase who run the ford focus will not be out till half way into the season due to not finding a title sponsor. United Autosports will not be running, PowerMaxx just sponsored a team last year, this year they've purchased that team and are running two chevvy cruzes. Going to be another good looking grid thats for sure!

Rule changes for 2015. I'm not keen on the race 2 grid or the tyre rules.

The British Touring Car Championship has announced substantial 2015 rule changes encompassing boost and success ballast regulations, grid formats and measures to equalise start performance between front- and rear-wheel-drive cars.

Calls for revisions to the regulations were prevalent during the 2014 season as Colin Turkington swept to the title in WSR's rear-wheel drive BMW, with a number of leading rivals arguing that their front-wheel-drive machinery was unfairly pegged back.

A series statement said that success ballast would "considerably increase" from the current 45kg maximum, with exact levels to be finalised, and that "rear-wheel-drive cars will carry their success ballast as far forward in the cabin as possible, in order to better equalise the front to rear weight balance between both drivetrain formats".

It added that "Cosworth and Xtrac will independently analyse the startline performances and in-gear acceleration of front and rear-wheel drive cars with a view to more equalising them through engine management programming".

The previous system of adjusting cars' boost levels based on the fastest laps set in the preceding two events will be dropped in tandem with the success ballast revision.

A season-long boost level will be set for each car and engine type instead.

FURTHER CHANGES

There have also been revisions to the sporting regulations. The race two grid will now be set on fastest laptimes from race one, rather than the opener's finishing order.

The rule mandating that soft tyres are used for one race at each event has been amended, with drivers now required to use the softs three times in race one, three times in race two and three times in race three over the course of the season.

The soft tyre rule will continue to be suspended for Thruxton due to the track's tyre-punishing nature.

The final change applies to the Jack Sears Trophy, which is set to be become a prize for the top rookie driver, though it will be awarded to the leading one-car team if there are insufficient newcomers.

This year the trophy went to the driver who completed the most overtaking moves during the year, and was won by Dave Newsham.

It had previously gone to the championship's leading Super 2000 driver during the transition towards a full NGTC grid.

BALLAST INCREASE FOR 2015

The success ballast applied to frontrunners has been increased significantly ahead of the 2015 season.

Previously, the ballast amounts were the same as in the series' S2000 era, but organisers believed the previous figure was not representative of the NGTC's higher base weight.

This year the championship leader will have to start each race weekend with the maximum ballast of 75kg, up 30kg from 2014, while the handicap now extends to the top 10 instead of the top five.

It will be awarded as follows: 75kgs; 66kgs; 57kgs; 48kgs; 39kgs; 33kgs; 27kgs; 21kgs; 15kgs; 9kgs.

Nicholas Hamilton officially joins the 2015 ‪#‎BTCC‬ grid racing for AmD Tuning
They'll be running the Audi S3 for 5 rounds as a Guest (aka cannot score points in the championship).

And I have to agree Skeeter with the Gird for race 2. But time will tell if its a great idea or not. Personally I think 2nd fastest time from Quali would be a better idea but I guess with the number of laps that will get removed for track limits (especially at brands hatch) that could have made an interesting grid.

Whats to stop the guy at the back just pitting at the end and putting fresh tyres on and banging in a fast lap to snatch pole?

It will mean anyone out of the points in Race 1 should just give up racing and spend the remainder of the race doing qualifying runs. Seems really odd.

The grid for race 2 at each event will be set in the order of the fastest lap times achieved in race 1. If during race 1 a driver changes one or more tyres of the same type then any quicker lap time (if achieved) after that tyre change will be discounted.

That. But if you get a puncture on the 1st lap and limp home you may as well retire the car. I would prefer say 80% of the race has been completed on the tyre that way your weekend isn't a total waste if you get unlucky with a puncture or damage.

I can see what there trying to do, but that seems even more broke. Like you say getting a puncture early in the race means you will likely start at the back of Race 2 regardless of what you do in Race 1.

Why cant they just use qualifying times like normal people :p

In other series there's typically there's a limit in place of laps before the end where a fastest lap counts. No idea if such a rule is in place here though.

I'm more annoyed by the rear-wheel drive equalisation attempts. It's fair enough on its own, but when you consider that the rear-wheel drive cars take quite a bit longer to bring their tyres up to speed, if their get-away speed is equalised, then they are actually being punished.

Because ultimately they don't want the fastest cars at the front. Starting with the fastest cars at the front leads to processional, predictable races whereas mixing things up a bit leads to the kind of carnage the average BTCC fan is there to see.

The challenge is to develop a means of getting a mixed up grid that can't be manipulated by the drivers to try and get pole.

It's a battle they've been fighting since the early days of the reverse grid where it was always the top 10 who got reversed and you had the dangerous situation of a cluster of drivers approaching the finish with some big speed differences as they all tried to finish 10th.

We've got passes for all MSV circuits this year so will probably be getting to Brands and Oulton as well as our usual Snetterton this year.

Yeah the 3 race rule does create a bit of a "what do we do with this?" situation with the 2nd race.

I just fear this new system will see people at the back sacrificing the first race and using it to do some qualifying runs to blag a top grid slot for the second.

Running the 2nd race in race 1 order but with the much increased ballast should be enough to ensure the front guys don't run away with it?

We shall see. Only a couple of weeks until Brands :). I hope it doesn't rain!
