Hi,

I'm currently writing up a new CV, and am wondering about how to display my BTEC First Diploma in ICT. The grade is a Merit which is equivalent to 4 GCSE's grade A*-C. So should I put an extra 4 A-C's on my GCSE list?

My BTEC IT was A level, as it got me into uni. But on my CV i've put my actualy mark then next to it in brackets ive put the equivalent of it in A level terms.

BTEC First Diploma = 4 GCSE's at Grade C (I think)
National Diploma = 3 A Levels

It's just the equivalent really.

Yes I understand that but the value of my house is worth 2 Ferrari's but that doesn't mean I have 2 Ferrari's - hence put it as what it is and not what it's worth.

NB: I don't own a house or 2 Ferrari's

Thats an awesome point! Then again, an employer should really know about qualifications to be honest!

Whats a GNVQ in IT worth to employers? (I got a Distinction and it was done at the same time as my GCSEs)

(sry to hijack the thread lol)

I got a GNVQ before my BTEC and I think its worth 3 GCSE's at A (Providing you got a Distiction). Thats what I was lead to believe anyway but I did mine at college.

Edit: It depends which GNVQ, the one at college and the one at school are different (I think the one at school is a shortened version because at college it took up a lot more time than it would have at school)

Thank's for the help guys. I think I'm going to try and put it how Buckey mentioned. What do you think of the below layout?
Note, the CV isn't going to be used for any type of full time work, simply part time while at college...

Yeah thats how I put it although isnt a Merit the equivalent of a B?

But as the BTEC is such a big course I gave it bit more room and had a list of the different parts of IT that we studied in the course.

Something like:

BTEC IT

This included:

Programming
Business IT
Hardware Maintenance
Networking

and so on... (I cant remember them all off the top of my head)

Edit: For the GCSE part i'd put which result you got for each subject as employers tend to look for certain results in certain subjects.

Most people will know what a BTEC is and what it is worth in "GCSE or A Levels".

I have a BTEC National in Motor Vehicle Technology (OK, not the most useful qualification in my current career path entry of IT Manager, but still) and I make sure the BTEC is still mentioned.

Ouch, try and leave education out?

I know my GCSE's aren't that great, however it's much better to be honest and put them on there. It will be easier to put it on there, than have to raise it in an interview, and try to explain why I didn't include them.

Like I said earlier, the CV is only for part time work around college in a shop or something, I won't be going for particularly skilled work so grades shouldn't be overly important.

I am currently studying National Diploma IT at college, and retaking my maths & english GCSE's.

Most employers would generaly know what the grades mean, especialy if it is related to the job.

Your CV looks fine for appliying for a part time job though but it really depends where you apply.
