Hi.

Does anyone know much about BTOpenzone?

I've just moved to a new apartment and don't have a phone line fitted, there is a possibility of moving again in 6months so am reluctant to sign up to any contracts. I've just done a scan of networks in the area and picked up a BTOpenzone network and BTFon(same). Looking on their site, I can pay £12.50 for unlimited access on there.. that'd be quite handy.

Is their service designed for stuff like this, or just a quick play on a laptop / phone when sat at the pub? Is it unlimited, what kind of speeds does it pull?

I was planning to use my mobile, but it seems vodafone don't have great coverage here so i'm stuck using GPRS :(

I used to be able to pick up 2 BT hot spots in my area too, and from looking on the BT hotspot map they are around half a mile away. Not bad for WiFi! The only thing is though for some reason they both went offline/disappeared a month ago and I cannot find them again since, I used to be able to find them on my laptop, my mum's laptop and my mate's computer down the road and they seemed to have disappeared of their's as well which means it was not just my laptop which stopped being able to find the hotspots. So really I would not reliy on the WiFi hotspot but maybe get a low term broadband contract maybe? It also costs around £125 to have a BT line fitted. When I was connected up to the local Wifi hotspot I was connected wirelessly at 65mbps (depends if you are using an N compatiable adapter as the hotspot was N compatiable) and it seemed pretty quick when it first navigated to the BT openzone login page.

i'm reluctant to get a line connected due to the £122.50 cost, i know i can get a rolling 1 month contract for the line via the post office and can transfer my old Be account (will mean no min contract).. thats gonna weigh in at around £27 a month.. plus £122 to connect it.. it's getting silly.

Have picked up some very strong wireless networks, tempted to pop next door and ask if I can use theirs!

trying to load 'three' coverage map.. but it's going very slow, post code is S1 4AD if you wanna look!

Indoor and outdoor coverage, so there's your answer, three mobile broadband dongle, no slouch either as it's hsdpa!

If you get a decent connection ,then btopenzone and bt fon are ok, however, they just piggy back from someone elses connection, so could be like 2 meg or something...

if you have a lappy, then a 3g dongle is a good option, but again, regardless of what people say, I use mine in many places and the connection can be dire, like 45+ secs to load a website...

You pays ya money and takes ya pick...
