have locking up issues sometimes when encoding dvd. cpu runs at 100% so is usually touch and go wether it lasts the required distance. i know the cpu is a little dated now and would a newer cpu and mb make a difference or could the problem be something else.

many thanks

I presume by encoding you mean converting and if so, then yes a new setup will definitely make a HUGE difference. The new conroe chips are a brilliant upgrade path as they make your setup future proof, and if you get a ds3 (like me) this will take the new kentsfield (quad core) processors......As you stated yes the CPU is dated, so this is most likely the cause of the problem..but dont quote me on that. If you do use your computer for encoding, gaming etc, then most certainly a new computer will help you out.....If this is the case, state a budget, what you use your computer for etc and we will be glad to spec you a nice shiny new rig :)

Hope this helps

If its worked perfectly in the past then its most likely your software, unless its the cpu thats overheating. What exactly do u mean 'it locks up'. Does it just freeze completely.

yes freeze completly and have to reset>

doesnt happen every time i encode but more often than not.
but always runs at 100% cpu usage when encoding.

perhaps then you should try re-installing the software? Might make a difference....

would the software cause the cpu to run 100% when normally when i am not encoding, like now it hovers nicely at 10%.

my thinking was that encoding is high end stuff where as browsing etc is not.

surely this would be a cpu issue rather than software.?

but i am no expert just aking question.

thanks

try and free up what else your doing (kill of any progs etc) also put it on low on cpu setting.... may be slower but it may not hog your cpu...also see if theres any settings that you could make sure the software isnt killing your cpu

What program are you encoding the DVD with, I know of a similar problem when using DVD shrink. Shrink has problems with a newer method of encryption, as it is no longer updated and it sometimes locks that program and yours computer.

If this is the reason I have ways around this if required.
