hi guys,

looking for some advice on a build for my friend. I need to stick something together for him on a budget.

i currently have a copy of windows for him and a monitor so these are not required.

just need a base build which will run current games at an OK level for the aforementioned budget, thanks in advance for any advice given.

oh and i will be building it for him so just hardware suggestions on the build.

An alternative, if you don't mind a used processor (they rarely fail), is to take advantage of DDR3's lower cost, to fit in 16GB RAM and GTX 1060:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £453.56
(includes shipping: £11.70)

You can find used i7-4770 for £145.

i7-4770 is very slightly better than the Ryzen 1400 in single and multi-threaded tasks, and very slightly under i3-8100 in single thread tasks, but better than i3-8100 in multi-threaded tasks.

The 500W version of that PSU has 2 x PCIe cables instead of just the one, for better graphics upgrade options in future.

some good outside of the box thinking :D

you may actually be able to get whole used system as well- but above is good compromise between old/new/power and longevity :)

Hopefully DDR4 prices calm down to make budget Ryzen or Coffee (latter with budget boards when they are released) systems more feasible.

To be honest I don't think they will, new phone models from this quarter now all pretty much DDR4 - doesnt help Team Groups Vulcan went up £40+ from £104 to £140+ when they had plenty in stock wasn't a stock -to - dollar issue . Meant could get a ryzen core build at £400 :(

thank you so much for all of your suggestions - ive not bought any components for a while so im a little out of touch in whats best at the moment.

ok mate thanks so much for your help, which of the above build would you go for? im personally leaning towards the ryzen build. however if i could add say another £100 for him could this make the build any better? i just want to get him the absolute best bang for buck.

Ryzen personally, that i3 is solid but the Ryzen has double the threads which should give it a bit stronger shelf life ! But some people prefer one brand over another so wanted to spec both and both would be solid along with the 2nd had core option which would offer the best frame rate if your chasing numbers

That £100 may have to be put to windows, if not, Ryzen 1600 instead of 1400 followed by getting 16GB of that ram , followed by GTX 1060 3GB, don't think you'd have the money to stretch to 6GB one or even the 1060 . Some might say 1060 over the extra ram
