Hey all

My friends old (5yrs+) PC died last week and he needs some new bits so here I am. He's on a budget of around £300 give or take but doesn't need some things.
I'm thinking the following should work ok and even O/c a little ;)

Asrock ALiveNF4G-DVI (Socket AM2) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-006-AK) £46.99

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.80GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail (CP-162-AM) £52.86

Corsair 1GB DDR2 Value Select PC5300 Dual Channel Kit (2x512MB) (VS1GBKIT667D2) (MY-083-CS) £85.76

HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon 9250SE 128MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (PCI) - Retail (R9250-PTDW128-64bit) (GX-013-HT) £35.24 (He doesn't really play games on his PC as he's a console freak this it to stop using Mobo resources)

Antec Sonata II Piano Black Quiet Case - 450W Smart Power PSU (CA-040-AN) £78.71
Or:
Antec NSK6500 Super Midi Tower Case - 430W PSU (CA £69.31

A few £'s for some fans, the odd cable and this should work out at the budget price. He already has HDD, optical and peripherals.

Comments please!

You could go dual core for almost the same price. I'd use the onboard graphics as the 9250se is barely going to be any better and the performance difference in resources saved is negligible.

Agree with semi pro waster, but, if you could get him tp push his budget up that would be better as it gives him the option for a graphics card and possibly a cpu cooler so you can overclock that little bit more.

Thanks guys, I agree as well semi pro, I've always used AMD so you must forgive my "AMD fanboi" default setting! :D

Just checked the prices and the 800mhz 2.8ghz CPU is only £2 more than the one you listed, also another £17 would get 1GB Corsair DDR2 XMS2 PC6400 which also runs at 800mhz. With the case thats still only £305! Would need a cooler though. Still easily get a cheeky 3ghz though.

Damn thats pretty good bang for buck, I think I'll treat myself as well!

EDIT: As a final comment will the Artic cooler Freezer 7 pro work ok with this board and case?

Quick question as I'm also thinking of getting that Mobo. Does it really support 1GB Corsair DDR2 XMS2 PC6400 memory ???

I though that board only supports PC4200 or PC 5400 ???

Edit: I'm talking about the Asrock Conroe945G-DVI mobo !

From what I can see the motherboard will only support up to PC5300/5400(e.g. 667mhz) so there isn't a huge amount of point in getting PC6400 unless I am misreading but then there is no real harm either, it will just underclock itself and if you want to transplant it to another motherboard in the future it will work fine.

TIMUH! sorry but I don't know if the Arctic Freezer 7 will fit into the case.

Doh!

Your right the memory is not supported on the Mobo, I was getting excited and got carried away!

I'll email Antec about the cooler as it looks the best option for the money.
