Unless there's some other reason for choosing a DVD player that you haven't mentioned, then I think I would be tempted to look at a Blu-ray player instead. The reasons being...

(a) it will play DVDS too
(b) it scales up DVDS to 1080p (or the maximum resolution of the TV if lower)
(c) will support file playback, and possibly newer- or higher resolution file formats that a DVD player won't handle
(d) opens up a whole new world of access to films in HiDef from Blu-ray to help make better use of the HDMI-equipped TV
(e) a more future-proofed solution

Sony BDP-S1200 is a good entry-level player.

Tx for the advice i will put that to him but hes old and cant see him watching blu rays, but you never know.

At some point in the future Blu-Rays will be the norm and DVDs will become a marginal format. And if he's not great with tech then it's just easier because he can pick up film off the supermarket shelf and not really worry about the format.
