Hi everyone. :)

This will be my first ever PC build and I really need to know if the components I've listed will work fine together. I will be using the computer for Photoshop, 3DS MAX, gaming and watching movies. I will also increase the multiplier on the CPU to 15 for a quick boost, and I've chosen the AM2+ motherboard so I can upgrade at a later date. I will use the optical drives, mouse and keyboard from my old machine to save a few coins. :D

I'm £4.39 under my budget but after delivery I'll be over. The grand total is £595.61.
-----------

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition

Asus M3A AMD 770 (Socket AM2/AM2+)

OcUK GeForce 9600 GT 512MB GDDR3

Western Digital Caviar SE16 400GB SATA-II 16MB Cache

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2

Coolermaster CM-690 Dominator - Black

OCZ StealthXStream 500w Silent ATX2 Power Supply

Scythe Mini Ninja CPU Cooler

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g)

Belinea 2225S1W 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor

-----------
:) Thanks.

In that price range Intels are generally considered better than AMDs, especially if you're overclocking. Are you committed to an AMD build?

How many optical disk drives will you be bringing over? I assume they will be IDE (PATA) so being sure to get a mobo with enough PATA host ports is critical.

Welcome to the forums.

I probubly wont be the only one to recomend you go down the Core 2 Duo rout..

Replace the CPU with an E2200, and the cooler with the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, that will save you about £30.

Get a P35 motherboard, same price

ditch the Artic Silver, the stuff on the Freezer 7 is fine, saving you a bit more.

With that you may have an additional £35ish to use. Spend the £6 or whatever it is more to get the 500GB drive, then go buy some games with your change

AMD was the cheapest choice and I heard that a AM2+ board would be better for upgrade longevity.

Just the 2 drives so I'm safe. :)

The socket is going out of style when Intel integrates its northbridge into the CPU die. However, upgrades will still be nice for some time.

How's this look to you?:

It should overclock quite nicely.

no, the P35 will not be redundant soon. Its a very good chipset so expect atleast a year or 2 before you would need to even think about moving to a new mobo.

It looks great and I somehow missed that case with psu, I would have chosen it myself if I'd have seen it. :D I'm still a little worried about the p35 board though.

How long would it be until I would have to upgrade the AM2+ board?

Ok I'm convinced, Intel it is then. :D

I will go with the builds suggested by BillytheImpaler and Skeeter. The money I will save will not be spent on games but a faster E4500 instead.

Thx for the help everyone, I'll be back later for more no doubt because that chips seems more complicated to overclock than the AMD.

Cheers. :)

Another one bites the dust, with everyone on here recommending people buy Intels all the time what's going to happen to a competitive market place.

OP: good luck with your build.

Different people will tell you different things. It does make a difference, but not enough to affect the way I use a computer-it may affect others more. I think that Melbourne has done some tests to benchmark the difference, find a post by him and look in his sig.

When ATI produce reasonable competitors, the recomendations will come with choices.

the fact is, at the present time, Intel are the better choice.

4 years ago that was very different

In 4 years time, it will probubly be different again!

To the OP: Overclocking those chips is simple, but the E4500 offers very little over the E2200... save your money.
