looking to spend 400 on a new gamming pc..something I can upgrade over time...I have everything like mouse, key board, monitor etc etc...I do need a OS...would be much appreciated.:D

Did you get the Graphics card from your mate in the end?

The Operating system is going to kill the budget, you can use a trial version of Windows 8 for 3 months.

I'd try to push the budget a bit higher and aim for something like this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-6 Six Core 6300 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £89.99
1 x Sapphire HD 7750 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £79.99
1 x MSI 990XA-GD55 AMD 990X Chipset (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £79.99
1 x Patriot Intel Extreme Masters 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PVI38G160C9K) £49.99
1 x Toshiba (7K1000.D) 500GB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA050) HDD £39.95
1 x XFX Pro 450W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £39.95
1 x Xigmatek Asgard Pro Gaming Case - Black £32.99
Total : £426.95 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Windows 8 trial until you can get the OS. Ideally a second hand graphics card with similar or better performance to save a bit on that.

With this you'd get over double the performance of an APU so it's a very good start. The CPU can be upgraded to Steamroller next year. A CPU cooler can be added too to allow for some overclocking.
