Hi all,

I'm currently thinking about building my first pc (no experince) with a budget around £400. It's mainly to play css and starcraft 2(and the new one i guess). Could you guys help recommend me some specs?

Thanks!

thanks. i knew i was missing something but couldnt work it out. normally im pretty good at guessing how much i can spend on each bit, so i ended up spending the £20 that was available on a better case and PSU. now i know why there was £20 spare

Thanks for all the replies, if I were to bump it up to 450 would you guys recommend me getting better gfx card or mobo or even power supply? I remember reading somewhere the H61 isn't good for overclocking right?

You can't really overclock at all with the majority of H61 boards and you would need the k series CPU as well.

better graphics card would be your best bet. change the graphics card in my build to an OcUK ATI 6870. dont bother getting 1600Mhz RAM because the motherboard cant get the ram up to that speed (it will work, but the motherboard will just turn it down, making the extra £5 you spent completely wasted)

Oh okay thanks, do you think it's worth getting quad core? everyone seems to have recommended the i3 2100, I guess its a big price increase if I were to consider the i5-2300

if you can afford a quad core Sandybridge, then get it as its worth it in my imho.

but quad core AMD, forget it as the dual core i3 2100 is faster than the phenom quad/six core in games.

I think i'm going to stick with the duo core I don't think ill be able to spend that much, one more question which gfx card is better ? (gddr3 + more memory or gddr5 but lower memory)

Cool, do you think with the i3 I'll need any extra cooling such as: a cpu cooler or cooling paste? also is there much difference between the antec truepower 550w power supply and lepa w-series 500w supply? I saw OCZ ZS Series 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply on offer is this one better?

finally the tower, i'm thinking whether or not to go for a mini tower (if it would fit) such as:
Fractal Design Arc Mini Tower Case - Black
Cooler Master Elite 360 Mini Tower Case - Black

or would it be best to stick to: Zalman Z9 Plus Tower Case with Fan Controller - Black
