hey there, i'm looking for a good gaming spec, and although i havent overclocked anything other than my m8's graphics card, i'm not afraid of overclocking and so i want to base my rig around it. heres what i have been thinking of getting so far:

so what do you guys think? any suggestions? also, is the extra 2mb cache difference between the e6300 and e6600 worth the price difference? i'm also looking for the best value motherboard/ram combination for overclocking for the price ( motherboard budget £100 ex VAT, ram budget £130 ex vat). would i feel much of a difference in games having 2GB instead of 1GB if i have a 512mb graphics card? all help given is appreciated ^^, i'l reply when i get home from work tomorrow ( september 7th). PS, i'm just outta school so i'm practically broke. any money saving suggestions would be welcome.

The Geil, DS3 and E6300 are a great combo and will overclock very well.

lol. seriously though, ive been told that latency isnt the worst enemy of the core 2 duo architecture, would the ram in the 2nd spechave much of an improvement over the ram ii have in my original spec?

i'm also wondering why the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 200GB ST3200820AS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-085-SE) was specced over the Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache. i thought the 16mb cache would have been more useful?

edit: in regards to £920 being a budget,it isnt really lol, its just that my cousin will be buying this for me ( with my money) vat free hopefully ^^

I think the spec suggested by Murzo is far superior if you're thinking about overclocking :)

The E6300 will overclock like a beast, way above and beyond the stock 6600. Of course, the 6600 will likely clock higher again, but the money would be better spent on faster RAM and the graphics card ;)

So cutting down to the 6300 will give you scope to get the x1900xt and 800Mhz RAM. The rated frequency is higher on the Geil PC6400 kit, and it'll overclock to higher than 800Mhz as well. So forgetting the latency, this is where you will benefit.

I'd be tempted to stick with the Hiper PSU that you specced up tho, another small saving and it's still a great PSU. With the £50 saving that Murzo has worked out and the extra saving for getting the Hiper PSU, you could even spec up to a Raptor HDD for faster loading :)

tottally agree!!!

Get the DS3, Geil 2GB Ultra low latency Ram and the 6300!! leaves urselft money for a 1900 xt, 70gb raptor and a 80gb barracuda! then set it up in raid. From that you will have an extremely quick system, which will blow any games out the water!! ;)

People have been getting 2.8ghz or more from the 6300 on air!! dam good deal considering its like £10 more than a X2 3800!!!

ok thanks guys. unfortunately i need to save as much as possible, so 1 hard drive is enough :P. thanks for the tips though i'l save this thread in my pc now :)
