Hi all,

Been under a rock for a while.

My son is having problems with some games, WoT for example isn't running, he has an old Sapphire HD 4870 1gb Toxic GPU and even updating drivers seems problematic. 650w BeQuiet PSU in his machine with a Q9550 and 8gb of DDR2.

I am wondering wether or not I should buy him a new GPU, or strip one of the cards out my old machine, which is running two MSI R7950 Twin Frozr in Crossfire. But would a more up to date card like the Nvidia 1050ti or recent AMD models be a better option than the old MSI R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5?

WoT, old and new Warhammer games, G-Mod, C&C titles, Warframe, Unturned Etc are a few of the games that will be played.

Yeah he probably needs a new PC too, we all do, as currently it's 4 PC's with 4770K, G3258, Q9550, and an Intel E8500 I think in the family.

The 7950 isn't a bad card still, should perform almost on a par with a 1050ti. If you already have one you can use I would suggest sticking with that for now unless you're upgrading to a 1060 at minimum.

The 4770k is still a very capable CPU and will probably last another while yet. The Q9550 not so much, although it probably won't be bottlenecking a 7950 - I don't know what you normally do with your old parts when you upgrade but a 4770k would make a nice base for a new system for your son.

This is a terrible time to be doing a card upgrade, The market prices are sky high due to mining so if I was you I'd give him a 7950 temporarily and then keep an eye on the Members market here for a secondhand card,

Thankyou for the replies!

Yes i didn't realise card prices were so volatile.

Maybe better off looking at a new build or replacing the G3258 with a second hand i7 and adding more memory.
