Hi there

Apologise in advance for wall of text.

TLDR version:

I want a budget machine that can handle 1080p footage in Premiere Pro smoothly during editing stage, but don't mind longer render time with slower processor. However, future upgrade to processor would be ideal.

Long version:

I've been making amateur climbing videos on my laptop for a while now, but having recently upgraded to 1080p footage the machine's seriously struggling to handle previewing of footage on the timeline. I've had to resort to pre-rendering my timelines to preview the results smoothly.

This basically turns a 30 minute editing job into a whole evening's worth of waiting, all before I could feel remotely confident to hit the export button.

Whilst I don't mind the rendering time (since I can do it overnight), I'd very much like to get a machine to makes the editing stage a lot smoother, which I assume has more to do with graphics card and memory than the CPU.

Could anyone recommend me the cheapest approach I could go for, with potential upgrading path should I take up the video editing more seriously in the future? i.e. can I get an i5 core now and upgrade to i7 later? I'm seeing a lot of 1155 socket motherboard options and it's a bit confusing!

Things I know I'll need:
  • Primary Harddrive: SSD 60Gb
  • Secondary Harddrive: 3TB
  • Monitor: 22" 1920x1200

Things I don't know:
  • CPU
  • Motherboard
  • RAM
  • Graphics Card

Many thanks in advance!

I am happy with self building, but unfortunately I don't necessarily have a fixed budget - which I know makes it difficult.

My problem is I don't know what's the cheapest option, so I don't know where to set the bar. I can in theory afford £1000 on the machine and the monitor, but if I can achieve decent video editing for sub £500 then I'd like to aim lower.

Hope that makes sense in some way, and apologies for being awkward!
