Budget HiFi Recommendation!!

Hello all, looking to hook up my dad with a decent pair of speakers and amp for his record player I got him for Christmas (AT-LP60BK). Budget is around $150. Am I better off getting him a pair of powered monitors or a speaker+amp combo? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks!

£150 isn't really enough to buy a 'decent' new amp and speakers combo. That's not the same as saying that you can't find an amp and speakers within that budget, it's just the number of compromises involved takes the gear out of what I would class as the 'worth owning' category.

Focus your search on powered speakers. At this price point the all-in-one solution makes better use of the manufacturing budget. Stick with simple 2 channel speakers rather than a sub/sat system.

Roth Audio VA 4 speakers. At around £180 they're a bit over budget, but they do have a built in phono preamp and do sound decent.
