Thanks to MSI giving Intel the middle finger, breath deep if you're going to read this out loud, the 'MSI MAG B660M Mortar Max Wifi DDR4' (that's a lot of MMMMM's) will allow you to overclock none K SKU Alderlake CPU's, good show MSI....

Linus used it to get an i5 12500 to 5.2Ghz all core stable.

High BCLK was always an option on X58 (Nahalem) because it could be offset by other options and more importantly voltages in the bios. All that Linus did was raise the ram voltage and probably core voltage in that vid.
Although he said 5.2Ghz was stable, i very much doubt he did enough if any real testing to be 100% shure it was stable. I full well remember clocking a 920 on both DFI and EVGA mobo's and both needed a complete understanding of all the options in the bios, because if you didn't have a full understanding it involved continuously having to re-install windows because of corruption. That was before you even got to the point of GPU corruption.

The trick with the Mortar Max is it has an external BCLK generator, so IIRC it can run normal 100 BCLK for PCI-E/SATA/PCH etc, but then ADDITIONALLY run a custom BCLK for the CPU (IE 120).

I believe there is an Asrock board the same also.

Honestly I have to rebuild a system sometime soon around black Friday and was considering this with a 12400. Would be very potent if overclocked to close to 5GHz on say a 240mm AIO. Realistically even with binning it's likely there is some extra left in the tank if voltages and cooking are pushed on most silicon.

The downside is pricing on it looks bad so far, which then defeats the point of overclocking as you might as well just spend the money on the better chip (with better memory oc support). If the board only costs a little extra it makes a lot of sense.

Yeah that's what i thought, there is a dedicated chip on the board that handles all of this.

I know its a totally different beast with architecture and core count etc.. but i do giggle sometimes that people were expecting 10Ghz+ cpus by now when i hit close to 5Ghz back in the day 17-18yrs ago with my Northwood 30 capper 3.2Ghz :D

But the worst part being it was out performed by a 1.6GHz Centrino Laptop CPU.

Don't think Intel will be happy to see the Mortar Max widely available. And Intel can quickly teach MSI a lesson, by not selling any chipsets to them.

OCUK probably have an MSI contact - wonder if they can ask if and when the mobo will be available in UK.

It is available for pre-order in the UK. £50 more than the non MAX

Cool :)

Intel has increased the price of 13600KF by 30 quid compared to the 12600KF. Getting a Mortar Max and a 12400F or 13400F and overclocking all P cores to 5.1GHz will surely be worth it and a lot of fun.

As Alex mentioned this board also has an external clock generator - https://www.asrock.com/MB/Intel/B660M PG Riptide/index.us.asp

Both the MSI and the AsRock are available on AliExpress, and one UK hardware shop has the MSI on preorder. Hope more UK sellers get these boards in stock. If Core i5-13400 and i5-13400F come with Raptor Lake cores (https://www.club386.com/here-are-al...ptor-lake-cpus-being-released-some-surprises/ ) and these boards can overclock them to 5+GHz this is going to be the rebirth of value overclocking :)
