Hey all im not to sure if this is the place to ask. But seen few discussions here about NAS. I currently looking to buy a NUC for the main TV in the living room. But it won't have an internal drive only SSD. Now our main HTPC in our bedroom the internal drive is nearly full and our external drives are nearly full due to backing up our movie and music files. Now im looking for something that we can download to aswell as show our movie and music collection on the HTPC in our bedroom aswell as the NUC in the living room. PLEX will be used to show our films and music. But that will be over the local network so Transcoding won't be an issue. I will be getting a PLEX pass due to a family member been a user to stream my film collection. At the moment he brings his drive to exchange films so PLEX will be ideal if he wants to watch a film i can put it on my PLEX for him to view.

Requirments

Be able to stream 1080p on 3 tv's 20gb + MKV's With HD audio ( if needed) 2 at the most bedroom and living room

Leave on most of the time instead of leaving the HTPC's on due to downloading and Streaming

8TB storage will be enough

Low on energy

Cheap as possible Budget £300

A Synology NAS would be a fine choice. That's what id proberly go for if it can be around £300 if i have to cut back from 8TB to 4TB for the time been that be ok

I *might* be selling my old Synology DS412+ soon (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-068-SY) on here in the near future if you're interested. Was going to put up on the MM.

Was looking for around £225 for it, although my sister wanted first dibs so I am just checking with her first before I officially put it up for sale, if she says no it will be going up there instead.

Yea that be great many thanks.Just let me know and we will sort it

Transcoding won't be an issue i have HTPC with plex on and the NUC will also have plex which will be on the main TV so i can login to my plex account on the NUC which will have windows 7 on. Im looking for mainly storage for the NUC and my main HTPC the storage on my HTPC is nearly full and the NUC will only have SSD with no internal HDD.But a family member might want to use my plex to stream my movies but i don't think transcoding will be needed

Thing is im not to sure what to do my HTPC in our bedroom is i5. Now i want a NUC for the tv downstairs that will have plex put on. The NUC will run windows. Now my HTPC has only 1tb storage and that is nearly full and when i get a NUC i will just be running an SSD with no internal drives. The external drives i have at the moment are nearly full due to backing up my movies and music. Now this is where im stuck.Im sorry im tech savvy and don't have much of a clue on these things. Now im not sure to get a NUC that doesn't have much power processing wise and get a more powerful NAS to transcode my 1080p mkv's and 3D films most of my collection are over 20gig films and fair few 720p films with DTS. What are others thoughts on what to do any help be appreciated many thanks

How does the HP microserver handle transcoding ? my HTPC doesn't need it and when i get a NUC for the tv downstairs that wont either. Been looking at the i3 NUC. But we do have a Samsung S tablet and 2 smartphones aswell as a laptop but the laptop is powerful also

Thanks everybody for your help and replies.I do like option one SANSNOM posted. i have a few questions if ok please

Now our HTPC has an i5 processor and ive opted for an i3 NUC for our main TV. And the laptop my Mrs has is also an i5 so im right in thinking that transcoding won't be an issue around our home network?

At the moment we only have 2 half TB filled with films and music at the moment so could i get a 4TB drive for the time been for a NAS or would i be better getting all the bays filled?

Transcoding now i have a relation who is the only user on my PLEX account at the moment. Now he uses a NUC also which is an i5 for his main TV. Now would transcoding be an issue or would i not need to transcode?

Now i might be adding a friend to my PLEX account but he also has an i7 processor. Now if they need to Transcode. Now if they was to use my PLEX account at the same time would they Transcode off one machine like my i5 HTPC or would Transcoding be done over 2 machines like my i5 and the i3 NUC if so would i need 2 different PLEX accounts 2 do it over the 2 machines? (HOPE THAT MAKES SENSE LOL)
