Budget PC upgrade time

Is the extra money for the E6400 really worth it? You'll be able to overclock the E6300 pretty much as far as you could get the 6400 anyway. essentially you're paying for the 8X mp instead of 7X. Apart from that the chips are identical.

Fair question. So why are Intel releasing both? There doesn't seem to be much between them.

To make money off those that either don't realise or want that extra multiplier. The only reason that the mp would be the limiting factor would be if you had poor memory or a board that didn't support good RAM dividers.

Or of course a poor MB like mine that can't get over 300FSB

You're getting pretty decent RAM so I think you could go with the E6300 and clock it up pretty much as far as the 6400 even with the lower multiplier.

Just seen that I can get Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 for £187 so that may be a better option. And that would work nicely with the e6300.

And you'd probably get a better result spending the cash you save by getting the E6300 on the RAM anyway :)
