Hey guys, need some advice - looking to spend ~ £300 setting up a really cheap and cheerful little server for messing about on at home and experimenting with new software, such as Windows Server 2008/Exchange 2007.

My main requirement is 64-bit processors due to the fact that Exchange 2007's feature set will be crippled in the 32-bit incarnations. If it wasn't for this fact i'd pick up a cheap HP ML350 G3.

All I really want the server for is as a testbed to learn up on current and forthcoming server technologies and perhaps after i'm done tinkering about have a fairly stable platform to run as a home office server.

Any advice on what route to go? I'm looking at opterons as they seem the cheaper option, open to any advice though!

I did the same as you and I'm just running on a cheap E2140 and an IP35-E mobo. Good enough to run a RAID5 array (4x 80GB disks in mine as they were free), cheap, and copes with RC0 and Exchange 2007 fine.
