Hi,

A friend has asked me to build him a budget gaming pc and I am pretty much out of the game, I bought my q6600 and 4870 when they were new and haven't upgraded since,

I was wondering if you guys could take a look at my spec I have come up with, He only has £400 to spend at the moment but said he would be willing to spend up to £500 if it was a vast improvement so naturally I went for the £500 mark :)

If someone could show me what difference it would make if I cut £100 off my spec and if mine is decent for £500 I would be very grateful,

CPU – Intel core i3 530 2.93GHZ Dual core £79.99

Graphics- Sapphire ATI radeon 6850 1GB DDR5 £164.99

RAM – Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3 1600MHZ £65.99

Motherboard – Asrock p55m pro £78.98

Power supply – corsair CX 500w £49.98

Case – Xigmatec asgard £ 28.99

Hard drive – Samsung 500GB £29.99

Total price £498.91

He isn't bothered about the case as long as it all fits and 500GB is fine for a HDD for now, he also already has a monitor and an OS

Thanks for your time

That's good, you can also use the the corsair CX430 PSU.

Or put a GTX460 1gb in with the 500w psu.

Looks to be an excellent build there. If he wants it a bit cheaper, downgrading the 6850 to a 5770 will offer perfectly acceptable performance for £60 less, but I'd recommend the 6850/460 at 1900x1080, as the extra power will be useful for the better games.

You can get a quad core AMD (e.g. the 630) for the same price as your i3, and mobo prices are comparable. I'd say the i3 will likely provide better performance for most games, with the X4 630 taking the edge on those using more than 2 cores (most notably the XBox ports)
