Old question I know, but basically I'm wanting to upgrade my current pc to something new, on a budget but with some future proofing. Current spec (all stock) is...

Core2Duo E6750
Asus P5N-E mb
4gb ddr2
Radeon 4850 512mb

I've seen this bundle http:// http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-241-OK&groupid=43&catid=2512&subcat=2686 of an i5 4440 & 8gb ram would be a good upgrade along with something like a R270X.

I've got a budget of around £450, i know any upgrade is gonna be a decent jump in performance. But looking at games like BF4 and future games and console ports, would I be better with an Intel or AMD system. A lot of talk of the Mantle thing, but the i5 chips seem to be able to handle stuff just as well. Any suggestions would be great, cheers.

Mantle isn't specific to AMD processors.

But I'd want more than an R9 270X when I'm spending that much money, go for an FX8320 with a board and R9 280X if you can.

You say Budget, I think AMD.
I'm no expert by any means, but my FX6350 copes with everything well enough, overclocking is a breeze (4.5GHz without batting an eyelid) and it's pretty cheap.

Sorry forgot to say I'll be using my old lian-li ATX case and I'll confirm psu but if I remember right it's a corsair hx 800. So general consensus is AMD better value for money?

Checked my old PSU and its a Corsair HX 520w. Would this be enough to run say a modern I5 system?

Right looking at ordering in the next few weeks, still can't decide between an i5 4440 or the FX-8 8320. Both are a similar price and I know an i5 board is more future proof with the Haswell refresh coming up, but tbh this system will probably last me a fair while as it is. I'm just looking at gaming with some net browsing, so which chip would be best for the job & money?

You can get a 280X in the MM cheaper than that 280.
Might also be worth looking for other parts or open a Wanted thread, you would get more for your money.

If you want an I5, then you want a 4670k and z87 motherboard, if not then I'd go for the 8320.

Its a good board, seen many high clocks with it online, 6+2+2 power phases according to the Asus website.
