Afternoon People.

I want to upgrade my PC now because it is struggling to run games on a 24" monitor at 1920x1200

with the new intel chips out in a year i cant afford to fork out for 2 heigh end pc's in a year so im going to just upgrade my current pc to a c2d system.

Current pc

AMD Opteron 170 Denmark CCBBE 0615EPMW 280x10 = 2800mhz, CPU VID = 1.450v
DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR
Crucial Ballistix 2GB DDR PC4000 (2x1GB) @ 263fsb (DDR 526) @ 2.6v @ 3/3/3/8
Enemax Liberty 620w
HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X1800 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
Thermalright SI-120 With 120mm Fan
2x 160GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 NCQ SATA-II - *Raid 0*
Coolermaster Stacker
Samsung 16x48x DVD ROM
LG GSA DVD-RW
Akasa AK FC-03 Fan Controller Pro

and im thinking of buying.

spec.jpg

is that mobo capable of getting the e2180 to 3.4ghz or higher?
also is there much difference between the Thermalright Ultra-120 and the extreme version? and is it worth the extra £20 odd.

are there any other recommendations or changes 1 should make?
Going to order Friday.

Thanks

Get cheaper mobo, like P35DS3L and get E7200 and Tuniq Tower instead.

E7200 will clock easier, higher and cooler, and is generally better.
You don't really need that kind of motherboard, p35ds3l is just enough for clocks up to 3.8ghz. And so are most of the older motherboards.

My thoughts exactly, although 3.8 is quite optimistic I'd have thought.

apart from the warranty's is there much difference between all the 4870 cards?

no, they're all just reference designs. they may be packed with different games, and look different but that's about it.

I'd look into getting an aftermarket cooler for the card though, have a read of some threads int he graphics forum.

wouldn't the card be bottle necked tho because of the cpu?

Yes. It will go faster though, but even faster with a new cpu.

I wouldn't get the P35 mobo, you will lose some performance with your 4870. That P45 looked good.

It will? How so?

Are you easyrider's evil twin? :)

damn all these threads about people not waiting for Nehalem.. stop tempting me!

Yep, perfect setup, you will be very happy with it and I can guarantee you that.

If you read carefull I didnt say his CPU will do 3.8, I have said that THIS MOTHERBOARD does just fine with clocks up to 3.8, maybe 4.0 - if you wanted to clock anything higher you will need better mobo ;-).

He wouldnt loose any performance ( maybe 3% ).

And TRUE also is 15 quid cheaper alone, + fan its another 13 on top.

and mobo thats extra 50 quid for pretty much no performance increase, I personally don't think true is more than 3c better than Tuniq to be honest...

Tuniq is still one of the best air coolers out there, it's cheap, reliable, silent, and comes with a great fan controler - what else could you want from it for its price ?

------------------------------------

Great idea with the aftermarket cooler for GPU, will allow you to clock it some and run a lot more silent as well.

You should be expecting 3.4-3.8 clocks off the CPU as well, depending on how good chip you get.

Goodluck

LOL 50 quid, mate, its about 20 quid tops if you check the one I had on that link.

The ThermalRight is the best one out there, better than the Tuniq, although as you say more expensive.

THe performance loss is bigger than that (around 5% to 7%). If I were you I will call in the morning and get the mobo changed. I agree that if you want to change the cooler for a less expensive and not as good one, then the Tuniq is a good idea, you won't notice much difference and will save you a few quid.

i ordered the TRUE from a competitor as it was about £20 ish cheaper

i have always bought thermalright cpu coolers atm i have the SI-97 and SI-120

i also ordered the Asus P5Q Intel P45

i also changed my mind and ordered the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev. 2 VGA Cooler with a Noctua NF-S12 1200RPM 120mm Silent Case Fan - 3 Pin

if this lasts me a year ill be well happy :)
