Budget Upgrade

Hi, Basically I have an old PC lying around, and am going to give it to my dad to use.

He doesn't want to play games with it, just everyday use and a few drawing packages ( Not intensive ones, as they run OK on his very old laptop ).

The Specs currently are:

- AMD Athlon X2 5000+
- Asus MB
- 2 GB DDR2 Ram
- nVidia 7900GTX
- Nexus 500W PSU

Now, the motherboard has failed and needs replacing.

So working with a budget of £100-200 (200 Absolute Maximum)

I was planning on keeping the GFX card, PSU, and Case, and really just tinkering with the cpu/mb/ram. However would you perhaps suggest upgrading other parts?

As I see it there are a few options available.

The cheapest being just replace the motherboard,
However its not that much more expensive to upgrade to an AM3 system (CPU+MB+DDR3 Ram)
Or even an i3 System.

Was wondering what you guys would suggest to get best value for money?

Thanks,

Haha Thanks 95thrifles.

That was along the lines of one of the options I had thought of.

2 Things however:

- How does the i3 2100 compare to an Athlon II x4 640 for example?
- And, What is the difference with all of these socket 1155 MB's and their different chipsets? Eg You can buy a H61 Chipset skt 1155 Board for slightly cheaper, But what does that lack that a H67 Board has?

Thanks again,

i32100> Athlon II x4 to the best of my knowledge, the only athlon x4 here costs the same as the cheapest phenom II x4 i believe and the i3 2100 can normally trump the phenom II.
